When I was working the side shows the guy that taught me Sword Swallowing had learned from some dude who was said to be one of the best going. This guy would toss a short blade up vertically into the air and catch it in his gullet... he did it for years BUT... one day he didn't heed caution to how cold it was and more importantly, how cold the blades were, the sword barely made it a third of the way down when the muscles in his throat contracted because of the cold... it was just enough to make the sword move out of proper position and bounce off his heart.

He survived the situation but, needless to say, did some significant damage to his throat and heart.

Anyone with a bit of determination can learn how to do genuine Sword Swallowing but like any of these oddity type skills, IT'S BLOODY DANGEROUS and you need to engage the brain even when you think you've mastered it.

This is one skill that actually demands one having an experienced mentor, it's just too dangerous... then again, I know of a couple of prostitutes that could teach you how to overcome the initial gag reflex
