Particularly if they are more advanced than us and want nothing to do with those dreadful Earthlings.

Spark gap generators, then AM, then FM, then digital FM, then low power satellite comms, then cable. We're pumping out less energy into space year on year, so there's a very small detection window of about 70 years for any civilisation anywhere.

Tomo wrote:Good point, but the signals used today are vanishingly small and precise. WiFi and mobile signals are designed to be short range, and atmospheric water absorbs radio very easily. By contrast, Marconi was pumping out a huge amount of energy at all frequencies in the hope that enough would get to the ionosphere, bounce back and make it to Newfoundland.
