HENRY EVANS LECTURE - LEAMINGTON SPA, 24th FEBRUARY 2010

Postby dat8962 » Feb 13th, '10, 12:47

Argentinian Magician and FISM winner Henry Evans is one of my favorite magicians so I'm particularly pleased to announce that Henry is lecturing at the Leamington & Warwick Magic Society on Wednesday 24th February from 19:30 hours onwards.

The Society meets at the Cubbington Sports and Social Club on the outskirts of the town (approximately three miles from the town centre).

I hope that some of you can make it to what should be an excellent evening.

I wish I could go to this. What Henry can't do with a gaffed deck isn't worth knowing about.

Rather than create another post on this topic I'll simply add the review here if that's OK? Hopefully the Mods will move if necessary.

Anyway, I was looking more forward to this lecture than any other in a long long time as I've been a great admirer of Henry and his magic for a fair number of years.

It's not often that you get to see a FISM winner in action at a local Society and it's more usualy for you to have to visit a convention. What was evident is just why Henry was regarded on the bulletin boards as one of the highlights of Blackpool last weekend.

Henry opened with a vanishing silk routine with the silk re-appearing almost instantly. I use the term 'almost' as Henry showed a number of variations of this routine with one being a tiemachine effect there the silk re-appeared after a count of five inside a pint glass. When this was explained in detail, those in the know appreciated the timing of the routine while those not knowing the secret were astounded by it's simplicity. Everyone appreciated the efect and it set the tone for the rest of the evening.

henry moved on a showcased a number of his routines, fully explaining how they worked but interestingly, his thought into how and why he scripted them as he did. Much of this was spoken in Spanish but was skillfully translated by Pablo who has accompanied Henry on his visit. This didn't detact one bit from the enjoyment of this lecture.

What was marvelus to observe was how a number of routines and idea could be seamlessly scripted together.

After the opener, Henry performed 3D Advertising where a Bicycle Card Leaflet was shown and he then pproeeded to shake one of the pictures off the flyer and turn it into a real deck. The deck was removed and then used to perform his Cards Know routine.

Later on Henry performed amongst others his Modern Times, Matchng Couples, 3 card Monte, Chinese Misers Dream, four by four forever and a host of others.

The principles are well known but are very difficult to spot as Henry uses these secrets in different ways to others which make you realise that you are sat watching a real genius. What's more is that in most cases you can then use the same deck to perform normally and include any of your own regular card routines which takes all heat away from the cards.

Highlights for me were the Matching Couples routine and had I not then seen Henry explain how this is achieved I would have never known. I ended up spending £70 on routines and came away thinking that I got a real bargain as all of these routines are real workers.

The age range of the audience was from ten to eighty and skill levels from Junior up to senior and MIMC level. No matter the age and skill, everyione was unanomous in their appreciation of Henry and there wasn;t anything that you could fault.
A highly recommended lecture by one of the nicest guys in magic!

I have to agree with the above, was a really good lecture.

As a relative beginner, it really taught me that the best way is the simplest way and that I shouldn't over- engineer things.

Was a really good evening!
