Spider Pen and Spools

Postby SleightofEar » Mar 3rd, '10, 07:28

Note: mods, please move if this is not the suitable category.

I have had the Spider Pen for several months now, and have developed a few issues with it.
First, is there any way to get stronger (kevlar) thread on the spools? I have not been able to find any but the standard Spider Thread. Mine break too easily when I am trying to lift heavier objects.
Also, is it possible (if the above question doesn't apply) to get Spider Thread cheaper than the offred price at ... uh oh....ELLUSIONIST?

Lastly, can anyone suggest a good book or dvd that isn't too pricey, that explains some routines (haunted deck, etc.) All hlp will be greatly appreciated.

I think you can get spools at a majority of Magic Shops.

A Common Problem with the spider pen and the tarantula is often you find the thread is abit tight, try it abit looser and as you say you have only had it for a few monthes just keep practicing.

Also with regards to you lifting heavy objects, what do you mean by heavy objects obviously a spider pen will not be able to lift a human or anything of a heavy weight.

Hope this helps.

What is it youre trying to lift ? The spider thread is actually quite strong compared to its invisibility. The stronger (thicker) the thread, the less invisible it is. The pen is designed for small animations and levitations, by small I mean light. Slightly heavier objects can be used but you have to 'lock' the thread as the motor isnt that strong. I use mine for a haunted deck effect with no problems, and find the thread to be quite reliable :)

Ps. If you want kevlar on the spool just buy some, take the old thread off the spool, and replace with whatever you like :)

Thank you. With heavy, I meant more along the lines of floating sunglasses.

Forgot to say, the Spider Pen isnt really suitable for the sunglasses effect as it uses a totally diffirent set-up. If you like this sort of levitation look for products by Steve Fearson :)
