Random Thoughts (Devon Knight) - Forcing a newspaper page

Postby Eshly » Mar 4th, '10, 22:39

The only way given in the trick explanation for Random Thoughts is a form of Equivioque, and this is VERY flimsy. It only allows you to use three pages of newspaper, and very few people are fooled by such a force (believe Joshua Quinn if you don't believe me).

Other than Add-a-Number I cannot think of a way of forcing the page number, without resorting to *sigh* cards. This trick I am hoping to perform right after two card effects, and a third in a row would be bad.

Basically my questions are these:

1. How do you reccomend forcing a page in a newspaper? Hoy's? Add-a-number?

2. Any tips on this effect from those who have practised with it more than me?

Hoy's could be adapted to newspaper- or you could use two newspapers and have the spc call stop as you turn through the pages and then they turn to that number in their newspaper and you'd have all the numbers in the newspaper the same. That is a little less consipcious compared to hoy's version.

Also by the way, if there is any suggestions on how to force a newspaper itself, from many newspapers, I'd like to know.

Currantly I have to use a single newspaper, but I know Derren did it with 10 and forced Daily Mail, if anyone knows the method, please tell me where I can learn it :)

Berglas' Newspaper Effect is what DB based his routine on....

However, one thing I would say Tom is this: Unless you've got an actual show in mind that you are preparing to perform don't spend too much time on trying to emulate the technique that Derren used for a theatre full of people. It is purely an academic exercise unless you've got an actual show lined up.

I would suggest that there are many other ways to force a newspaper (or anything for that matter) in situations you are more likely to find yourself in (cabaret, parlour work, etc). Once you've mastered those and your 'audience' expands, then start to worry about how to do it on a larger scale.

Just my 2p....

I understand that I am dreaming big when I write plans, patter or routines for a full stage show; but I don't think its too unrealistic as such places as The Cluny theatre in newcastle (a well known little theatre seating 300) is available with a soundsystem for just £100 a night.

I realised a while ago that I wanted to work on a stage, where I have complete control over things and can do almost any miracle I wish. My only worry is selling tickets, but I intend to come to that barrier when I meet it. For now I plan my show, and this routine is the final part which I have totally no idea of - I do want to perform a word prediction.

I DO have an actual show in mind, and perhaps it IS too ambitious for a 17 year old. But I met a man who looked no older than 25 last week at my magic shop, and he was performing three shows a week at the Live Theatre (a place which I know costs £1200 a night to rent out). I emulate that man, even though I never caught his name :P

I hope you understand my love and ambition for Mentalism, dispite my youth; and I hope that you'll be kind enough to help me. I'll try and find the Derren Brown effect, and see if I can mix them together.

Ok... I've just seen a copy of "Mind & Magic of David Berglas, The
by David Britland" on Amazon for $759...

... I don't think this effect can be worth that! o.O

It's not a Derren Brown effect, it's a David Berglas effect...

And, I know you won't listen to this but... don't you think ending your show with a big word prediction is just a teeny bit too much like the end of a Derren show??? In particular a show that has been shown on National TV to millions and is now readily available on demand on C4's website?

Not trying to be argumentative, Tom - just trying to give you some perspective.

You wouldn't like the book Tom. The methods are all the kind you'd hate; brilliantly sneaky and old school.

regardless of who did what and when...

how many times will it take for it to sink in?

you decide you want something - so you ask for it...
people give you solid, workable, good advice...
you ignore it and continue on this blinkered view of just what you want...
mentalism is about creativity, and presenting things in a unique way....

everything you've been told, its not good enough, you want it your own way, and thats it...

mr berglas and derren are very good friends, and you should heed derren's agent (michael vine) you should go away and consider his words..

"don't give me the 'next derren brown', give me the first 'whoever it is'..."

its natural to have an idol, however ask yourself this - would your idol want you to emulate him? or would he wish that you were unique and original and to go in other directions?

How difficult can it be to find out the name of a man who's playing three nights every week at a local theatre....? Look on their website at the listings!

If he's selling out three nights a week at a local theatre doing what you hope to do... maybe the market is already saturated?
