I think the magician causes us to look at the world again, the mind tends to reduce the world to diagramatic easy to explain phenomena. Magicians take advantage of this to create illusions which force the spectator to re- evaluate their perception, a minute ago they thought they new it all and now there is wonder and a fresh re-enchantment with the world. I think this re-enchantment process is important. We need to be coaxed on to become better, tales of Zen monks in caves who can pass there feet through solid rock serve as a carrot to the aspiring monk and give him something to aim toward.
Oh yeah and it's good fun tricking people!
