I guess it depends on the gig. A Wedding. Sure I can see that. But something like an office party or a Birthday party... That's just waaay too in advance.

Many of the venues, espeically for Civil Ceremonies, are booked way ahead of 12 month's time so there's a good chance that some coiples will seek to book entertainment etc as far ahead as that.

Bearing in mind some people have to book wedding venues 12-24 months in advance (and then save for the "wedding of their dreams") a 3 year engagement isn't unheard of (around here) but if people are looking to cut costs of the wedding to put towards the ever increasing mortgage deposits etc it won't be from the dress she's been fitted for or by asking one of the bridesmaids not to bother as they can't afford the extra dress.
It'll be the poor entertainers in the firing line first.

Which is a shame, and not just because we are the entertainment!

So if preperations for paying the entertainment started 3 years ago then some may not be feeling the recession in the same way as others are.

I had a wedding booking for last September which had been booked 9 months in advance and then they postponed until this September. I've also had people ring up and book for a wedding with as litle as a month to go, simply because they saw a magician at someone elses wedding and wanted one.

It's swings and roundabouts.

If you ever get the chance then get the booking as far ahead as possible and take a deposit. I always tell clients that next week may be too late as bookings are coming in all of the time. Even if they're not. Never ever say give me a call back nearer the time! They won't.
