Bells Book of Tricks…
Patrick Page. Published 1971
I thought that in light of the recent passing of Dear old Pat Page, I would write a review of one of his earlier books, Bells book of Tricks.
Originally published as a series of smaller books, Bells book of tricks covers simple effects with cards, coins, handkerchiefs, and paper.
At first glance, it looks like a magic book aimed at the beginner, which indeed it may have been. And as such, it’s possibly been overlooked many times, by those seeking complicated effects.
However, those who have passed this book by have missed out on some little treasures, some of which have been sold onto magicians separately. Take his 3 card monte` for example, released on video by Trick-a-tape, and latterly by L&L. It’s in there. As is his wonderfully simple torn and restored news paper. Something that takes seconds to make, and relies on nothing more than a humble elastic band..
His section on coin magic opens with several pages of good solid lessons on palming a coin. And the handkerchief magic section includes the hank mouse,an act in it's self, and the eggs in handkerchief. Something that featured in Simon Drakes Secret Caberet if i recall....
but theres more gold to be found..
Hidden away, is an effect called THE MAGIC CAMERA. This effect is currently being sold worldwide by dealers, as a business card printer. Indeed at his recent lecture tour, Dan Garrett had some ideas using this device. It’s on Page 82 if you have a copy of the book.
There are also a ton of little gags, stunts and bits of business, which should fit into so many acts.
Now alas, just like our dear friend Pat, the book is no longer around.
However, my copy came from ebay. And I am sure that it’s sitting on the shelves of charity shops, flea markets, and car boot sales everywhere just waiting to be discovered.
So, if you do happen to find a copy, or own one that’s been sitting on the shelf gathering dust.. do yourself a favour. Pick it up, open it, and remind yourself once more of the genius that was…
Patrick Page.
