Ignore the cliche title, i wanted to use something different than hello. That doesn't make me different though.

Although i guess i am. Actually ignore the lot of that, im just trying to sound a bit unique. Which makes me different, right?

Sorry, i guess there was no need for that. But yeah, here i am. (Gotta stop referencing myself  )

Anyway, the lot of that aside, my names Steve and I'll try to introduce myself as well as i can.

Im just finishing a gap year and am about to start a three year Film Production course at University. Im aiming to get into the film industry, hopefully Direction and Screenwriting. Which means that i am not aiming to become a professional magician, which i guess most people on here are in one way or another. Yet i like to better myself constantly so I'm sure i will stick at it for a long time to come.

Film and writing are my main passions but i have always been fascinated by things that appear impossible and also things that confuse/challenge me. Several weeks ago I watched 'The Prestige' one of Christopher Nolan's films about two rivalling magicians in 18th Century London. Several days after seeing that a colleague at my part time job showed me some very simple card tricks and i guess subconsciously the film and tricks moulded together in my head and planted a seed of interest.

That seed grew pretty rapidly and now im sitting here pausing between lines to toy with my deck of cards. Being on a gap year ive got a tonne of time spare and so Ive just been doing flourishes and practicing tricks all day every day.

Personally, Im easy going, not too-shy not too-open and I have an unhealthy obsession with video games, spending money when i shouldn't and becoming ridiculously addicted to simple things.

Thats me. Hope i can contribute a good deal here and ill stay as active as i can, although when i start my Uni course that will restrict me a bit but we shall see.

I'm sure i have written far too much, but like i said I am a writer :) .

Caio,
Steve

I hope so!

I guess what i was trying to say in all of the above is that I'm here because i want to be a part of the culture more so than try and get really good, that belonging to something that other people around you don't have.

Anyhow enough of my blabbing, i hope i can learn a lot from you lot and meet some cool people along the way.

And also i'd be very interested in looking into the mentalism side of things, as i noticed it seems to be a large part of these boards.

Cheers,
Steve

Welcome, but please don't get into mentalism for the sake of it. Get into mentalism because it suits you and because you like it, not just because it's a la mode. Sorry. But welcom, what type of writing do you do? (You knwo, there ain't that much difference between good magic and good drama/ media)

Oh sorry i must have come across wrong!

I noticed the mentalism thing being a huge part of these boards, and iv never really bothered to look into it, i doubt it will suit me at all. What i meant was that i would be interested to see what it was all about, as i literally have no more of a knowledge about it than it has something to do with hypnotism (ignore my simple opinion if it is entirely wrong.) Hell, i watched Derren Brown for the first time tonight.

Anyhow, im much more into the technical side, flourishing and card tricks as a main, as im more of an artistic person so that appeals to me.

That aside, I am a huge crime/thriller fan (who's not) and am a third of the way through my second novel (first turned out as more of a practice run :? ) Hopefully ill have that done within the next half year and try my best to get it published, my aim is to eventually turn it into a screenplay and direct the film (hell of a target i know.)

But yeah, that should cover your two questions :)

Cheers,
Steve

yeah, sorry perhaps I came across a little harsh. Its just that I see so many 'new comers' who see mentalism is in fasion and do it because of that. Do it beacuse it suits you- and you know what suits you by the sounds of it and thus have the making of hopefully a fine magician. You'll soon realise, once you have the basics, an appreciation for the performance, character, and drama which I'm sure as a media/ film student you'll latch onto, is far more important than actual complicated slight of hand.

Yeah, well like i said above it probably isnt my kind of thing as im more of an artistic person opposed to scientific/psychological. Visual and psychical opposed to mental and psychic, and all that.

Either way i hope that I will learn a lot about magic and the subsidaries that stem from it :)

And thanks for the welcome Dat :)

Cheers,
Steve
