There are some very interesting ideas for mentalism techniques on the LP. Due to the nature of this site, I won't give the name in the open, but PM me if you are interested, and willing to be patient, as all applications to the LP are read by the site owner, so it takes a while. Mods, if this is too much exposure, then I'll remove it right away, but I don't think the LP is really an exposure site. :D

My Experience

Postby magicollie » Apr 7th, '10, 00:11

Hi Dup,

Thank you very much for sharing.I recently performed my first mentalism routine at a talent show where I have everything mapped-out in my mind.I had the trick and patter perfected and still alot went wrong.

I started off with a number prediction which went to plan but wasnt a great trick, therefore, didn't get the best reaction.

Then went into the tossed out deck routine where I had there people on-stage and after I named the 3 cards the one of the spectators said loud and clearly "that wasn't my card".No clue how that could have happened but still i went on to a routine where I predicted the member of the audiences clothes.I had to do this before the show and write out the prediction and hope she didn't leave before my act!

The trouble here was the person I choose didn't speak English well.I got here up on stage why trying to find the most "physic" member of the audience so I would get people to name cards and the person how named the card closest to the one I have turned over in my deck of cards before the show(ID) would come up and help me.This meant that whatever card my instant stooge named i would say "that is the one I turned over! You must be physic, please come up and help me on-stage".I asked her to name a card and she said "the kings of sevens".It was a comedy moment but I died a little inside!I still went along with the routine as The person next to her helped her out. After that long process the women came up onstage after naming the King of spades.I perform the ID trying to reveal the King of spades and I get the king of clubs.I recovery a little by saying in a jokey manner "that's close enough".She opened up the prediction and it got a reasonable reaction.

Finally finished with a book test which went well, but I have learnt alot from this experience and things that I could only learn through going out there and performing.

I think you've got a healthy attitude about what failed and what worked in your show. You don't seem put off at all by anything that went wrong, and seem encouraged by what did. Its a great way to look at it. The stuff with the performance area can't be helped, and its good that your presentation was able to carry bits where the effects weren't working out as well.

All in all, hope you had fun with it, good luck with future shows!

Heya Magicollie,

It's been interesting to read your experience. The more I do mentalism, the more I realize that one of the major skills required is to pick the right volunteers: those who have glasses on, giggle a lot but not drunk, know english, etc. The other skill is to decide what to do to them when they actually get on the stage :>

I'll be happy to hear how your future performances go.

Matthius,

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I'm sure the next performance would be much better indeed.
