The Quizzing Thread

OK I've been into quizzing for just a few weeks now, and it's fun :) ..
First, the rules :
1. New questions can only be asked when the current one has been answered.
2. Clues can be requested :)
3. No searching for answers online !

Starting off with an easy one : Gimme X and Y..

X is a model village on the south side of Birmingham, England. It is also a ward within the council constituency of Selly Oak and home to a campus of the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design. Research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has claimed that it is "one of the nicest places to live in Britain"

In 1879, George and Richard Y moved their ______ factory from Bridge Street in central Birmingham to a greenfield site a few kms south of X. The Ys named X after a brook that passed through the place. In 1893 George X bought 120 acres of land close to the works and planned, at his own expense, a model village which would 'alleviate the evils of modern more cramped living conditions'. X also became the blueprint for many other villages around the country. Moreover X does not have any public houses because George is a quaker.

Alright.. Another question based on Colonial Britain :

The X system of education developed by Dr. Andrew Bell is so named because it was developed by him while working at the Military Male Orphan Asylum, _______, in X. X system was published in Bell's Manual which had been published by the National Society.

The school was arranged in forms or classes, each consisting of about 36 members of similar proficiency, as classified by reading ability.
The young teachers were kept to task through registers. Reading, Ciphering and Religious rehearsals were tracked through the Paidometer register. Discipline was held through a Black Book, which had entries read to the entire school, and faults were commented on in moral terms.
The hall was built in rectangles, with windows five feet from the floor, but opening at the top. Desks were placed against walls and the Master's desk was raised

This method was incorporated as part of the Monitorial system, which was widely adpoted by the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales and later the National Schools in the 19th Century.

X ?
