I've joined the Cafe but never made a post. I gave up searching for the correct sub-sub-forum in which to start my thread....

The Magic Cafe

Postby drewj » Dec 28th, '07, 15:17

Well I'm a member there too. There is something deeply irritating about it isn't there? The whole cafe theme seems pointless, the search function isn't great and without care the whole thing just robs me of hours of my life!

I've had poor experiences there too. A negative review deleted because Magic Cafe's owner was involved with the effect in question. Then one of his gang trying to say that would never happen even though it did. Some of their members aren't helpful, just plain up themselves.
However, they're not all bad so we mustn't generalise. I've had equally unhelpful responses from a dealer here in the UK. I'd like to warn you of that now but not sure if I can name names like that.
At the end of the day, Magic Cafe is run by a bunch of yanks. Most of them like to think things are bigger & better than they actually are, including themselves.

The loggin problems are still annoying and the search function is worse than on the Warhammer Tactics website I set up when I was 12 years old. If I can do it, without any training or real computer competance, why can't they? Is the site too big or something?

I've never messed with the Magic Cafe for the simple reason that I can't look at it for long. The green-and-black colour scheme hurts my eyes, and the general layout is atrocious.

And, as mentioned above, the infinite regression of subtopics and sub-sub-topics is irksome. The "cafe" theme was cute when the internet was a novelty and people didn't really understand websites and forums, but it's very dated now.

What I dislike about the Magic cafe is that there is a deeply christian bias, and as a non-christian I feel unwelcome there a lot of the time.

The place is pretty stupid. I don't understand why they have to have sub-sub topics or forums. The logical and practical thing to do would be to be anything non Magic related in a area that is just for general stuff. It's ridiculous for a bunch of magicians to make a website that is completely impractical. Seeing has how there are 12 year old's out there that can and WILL design a better website than the Magic Cafe.

I haven't even tried joining yet. From what I've read on the internet, in my experience (which may well be wrong), there is little in way of discussing the non- technical terms of magic such as presentation e.t.c.. It seems that they are all about promoting packaged tricks and to me come across as the type of ellusionists who present tricks verbatm. But that is only what I have read, so may be COMPLETLEY out of proportion. But I've looked like a total noob today anyway..

And what's with they're dumb search engine? You can't run a search straight after a previous one, you have to wait! Bloody ridiculous.
