£30 magic

Postby pb149 » Apr 14th, '05, 22:18

i will probably get a varied response, but i have £30 to spend on a new trick. does not matter what kind of trick it is - cards/coins/etc, but would be interested to hear on your opinion on what to buy.

it needs to be something reasonably easy to do as i am still quite new to magic tricks.

look forward to hearing your views

Nah - definitely a DVD. They're much better than any one gimmick...

Im a newbie too and I'd definatly say a book/dvd. Rrtcm is great, I also have a course guide for this so if anybody is intrested then pm me and I can distribute. I must say that I take no credit for this course as it was sent on to me from a different forum.

Save/borrow an extra fiver, and get 'get nyman' dvd by andy nyman. There is a review on this site if you are interested. Even if you dont use the effects explained on it, you will learn an awful lot.

I wouldn't recomend Nyman DVD's as you stated that you're relatively new to macic. I too would recommend a good DVD that's aimed at beginners and teaches some basic techniques, sleights, misdirection etc. You can browse online and I'm sure that you will find something that takes your fancy. You may have some money left for a copuple of decks of cards, sponge balls etc.

True - however, have you noiced that more an more beginner to intermediate level tricks are now coming with DVD, CD ROM or downloaded video instructions instead of written instructions?

I actually like this...DVDs are much easier to learn from than written material IMHO.

As an example, I bought Misled. I immediately watched the instructional video on Penguin, and only read the booklet a month later. It didn't help at all...

This may be just an opinion though...I'd be interested to hear what other people have to think?

different mediums suit different people - nothing wrong with that in my book (or DVD)

Another topic that was discussed in the deep dark history of talk magic. I think that on the whole we agreed to disagree. My presonal feeling is that DVDs are great, but I learn just as well from books, and you don't have to rewind them to recap on bits!

My 2 Cents

Hi there,

I'd have to say, if you fairly new to magic AND you like card magic AND you haven't got The Royal Road to Card Magic book - then this is a must.

You will also have change out of your £30 for a few decks of bikes and even a packet trick of some kind. I've just bought COLOUR MONTE - real easy - but so effective. Everyone I have showed it loves it and the end has a real 'kicker suprise'. It comes on specially printed bicycle cards with high impact faces!

Good luck!

Anything else I can help with - just let me know!
