I'm age 14. I've been into magic tricks ever since watching Lu Chen's performance more than a year ago.

I'm going to be performing the following trick this Friday for my school's talent show (trick starts at 3:00):

I'll be doing the trick slightly differently. I'll show the audience the deck and switch the deck with a gaff deck.
When I'm taking the rubber bands off my arm, I'll place the deck somewhere hidden from view (since I need both hands to take off the rubber bands). Once the rubber bands are out, I'll pick up the gaffed deck and continue from there.

Does anyone have any better ways of swapping the decks? I need a solution ASAP. Thanks in advance.

I didn't watch all of it and my chinese is a little rusty But that is an effect called 'Tossed out deck' by David Hoy. The best way is to not bother with a switch. There are many ways of getting around showing the deck to everyone without having to switch the deck, but here is not the place. Just don't bother- TOD is one of those tricks were you get to forget about everything else and just enjoy yourself along with your audience and amaze them.

I have to second this point... you are actually making the routine far more difficult than it need be. The ONLY exception I can see would be IF you were already doing some card magic with a standard deck and wanted to end with the TOD. Then I could see where a deck switch might be wise and necessary. Based on what you are saying, sounds like you have a relatively decent approach worked out but you might also look at some of Rick Maue's thinking on this topic... If memory serves me right, he shares a deck switch routine in his popular BOOK OF HAUNTED MAGICK" (Rick is a member of this board btw)

I'd go with what the guys above say and not worry about the switch. If you do need to switch, then just pop the deck in your pocket, do the business with the bands and then take the gaffed deck out of your pocket. Simple but effective.

Wait A Minute

If you were going to do a Deck Switch, what were you switching out for if you don't already own a TOD or even a 3-way Force Deck?

Then there's the matter of having what? 5 days before "the show"!?

My suggestion at this point is CANCEL THE GIG because you are NOT a magician but rather, a kid that does tricks and sadly, one that is B.S.ing himself a bit (and trying to B.S. the rest of us it would seem).

Unless you have a small ton of experience you should never grab up a new piece and toss it straight into your act. You've yet to script it, blocked out the handling, learned the handling, and understood what can go wrong with it and how to recover. You've not learned how to make it to be anything other than a "cheap trick" vs. Magic.

Pardon my harsh tone, but doing what you're talking about is what hurts magic. Stick with material you know instead of looking for "the trick" that's going to make you a legend... the tricks won't do that for you. Rather, it's how you work with what you have in your access that's been ironed out and run through over and over again. There's much more to being a "magician" than tricks

Sorry craig I have to respectfully dissagree. He's 14, It's a school magic show ffs. Your allowed to make mistakes. Is there anyone out there who didn't start off performing absolute c*** (not the best)? The only way to get good is to try and fail over and over again. And as we all know (if your over 18 ) whatever you do in school doesn't matter.

Awhile ago I was performing for no pay at the cellar door pub in aldwych (which is a converted public toilet) My first performance there was a complete flop. I was virtually booed off stage. But I left feeling like a success because I had completely gobsmacked one person and that was all I needed. The next gig I had there I only did one trick I learned the night before and I succeeded I blew everyone away. I could have just as easily failed but I knew it didn't matter.

I would also like to point out that I have been practicing magic as a skill since I was Ten. And yet when I'm on stage I'm mediocre at best, why? Because I have only been performing for real audiences for about a year. All the trick's and sleights I've learned mean nothing because I didn't practice performing except for family and friends (which is why my close up performances are pure gold and my stage performances are pure c*** (not the best))

Narutodude I'm not saying you will be c*** (not the best), but I am saying whatever you do now will be b*ll*cks compared to what you do later. So go for it, experiment, have fun, and don't be discouraged if things do go wrong and theres no reason to say that it will.

I do have experience in close up magic but this is the first time I'm attempting to do stage magic.

P.S. The talent show got postponed until next Friday.
