Tie me up effect...

Postby thebigcheese » May 19th, '10, 19:15

Well please...dont!

Ive performed on and off in the right circumstances, as Im not a rope man generally the routine in which a spectator ties you up and hides your arms with a cloth/coat etc and tight as possible. You then remove a hand to co-ordinate the spectator for a gag and place your hand back as if you got away with it. (Poor explanation I know, sorry!) I currently use the technique in Mark Wilson with 2 ropes, cant remember page no.

Anyways, Ive recently seen a performance of a similar routine being done with one rope. As pocket space is a bit of an obsession with me, id like to learn the source of this technique. If someone can point me towards the correct material I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance

It's the Kellar rope tie, you want, I think. Not sure where you'd find it though.

There are quite a few single rope ties in Tarbell 6 if memory serves.

It is in Tarbell. and encyclopedia of rope tricks.

The Foxy wrist tie is on the new Ali bongo dvd.( see review section for details).

Fulves self working rope magic.

check 13 steps ( Mediumistic stunts)

That said the Gyssel rope tie, which is the version you mention is very good. However, these ties are not close up effects.
So Im a bit puzzled as to why pocket space is an issue. :)

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Tie Me Up

I first did the one rope Wrist Tie at age 14 with instructions that came from Paul Clive's Magic Shop in Blackpool. Still have them.
There is 'The Kellar Tie Routine' in Bill Severn's 'Best Magic' paperback published by Stackpole Books in 1990. pages 148 to 156.
Strangely I sent a duplicate copy of the book yesterday to a young Scottish magician for his birthday.

Tie Me Up

And I forgot:
2 years ago for a young American magician I devised a routine based on the Wrist Tie which he loved performing in the local street.
Last year for a second young Scottish Magician; performing his first Children's Act I worked out a routine with Houdini being challenged by a crew of 'Captain Pugwash' type Pirates (don't ask!) and the young man's hands being coverd by a Pirate Flag attached to a rope, held by 2 small Pirates!
The patter idea for this was prompted by reading, Rope Escape, pages 96 to 98, in the Great Eric Sharp's book 'Specialised Children's Routines with Funny Patter & Situation Comedy for Children Using Standard Props.'
A long title for a brilliant book of patter & routines.

Tony Clark in USA sells his 'In & Out' Rope escape with one rope, covered by a volunteer's coat. Very funny routine. It was, but do check, on You Tube.

And of course Harry Blackstone performing his father's routine is a must to view.

A very old but popular trick that is enjoying new popularity.

I once saw Mac King perform a thumb tie, (same effect) with twist ties. I've always wanted to do that one, but for some reason I always put it on the back burner. One day I'll have to do the research and figure it out.
