Cant read

Postby jhmagic1 » Jun 5th, '10, 15:16

I have been having dreams recently that I cant read. I have a book in front of me and I cant read it.

I have heard that it isnt possible to read in dreams, but does anyone have any theories about having a specific dream that you cant read a book.

It all depends upon the individual. I highly recommend the book "Dreaming Reality." An overview of the authors' work can be found, for free, here: http://why-we-dream.com/index.htm

It's not that you can't read when in a dream, just that the text will shift and change. You'd have to employ a fair bit of focus for this not to happen. Most folks, anyhow. :)

I have heard that if you have lucid dreams you can make sense of blurred words.

I once had a dream that I wrote some lottery numbers on a card box, woke up and wrote them down......... Won nothing.

When you dream the part of the brain which recognises words isn't active, so you'll see a word, you'll know what the word means, but you won't be able to actually focus on the words

It's similar to when you have a word on the tip of your tongue. You know you know the word, you know the meaning of the word, but you sure as hell can't say what the word is :)

So nope, no deep meaning other than part of your brain has shut down. Which is interesting in itself :)

In the dream I also find myself getting distracted and looking away from the book in a sort of A.D.D way I guess.

Pretty much the only thing I dream about is my car brakes failing.

Apparently it's exceptionally common amongst drivers of all ages.
Used it as a line in a tarot spread I did recently and scored a hit.

[edit]Alright, I know I dream several times every night... I should have said "Pretty much the only thing I remember dream[ing] about is my car brakes failing" but I trust you will all excuse me this minor detail :P [/edit]

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

I've never been able to read beyond a word or two in dreams. I thought it was just me!

My memory system is apparently quite abnormal, and I can be very easily confused as to whether a given memory is of a dream or a real event. I always assumed being unable to read was a self-imposed safety mechanism so I wouldn't remember false things.

Does anybody else have a crew of little "creative staff" in their head, whose job is to create dreams? It works for me! If the quality goes down, I give them a stiff talking to, and it usually does the trick. Conversely, if they do an exceptional job, I praise them and ask for more of the same, but it doesn't happen. Occasionally the head writer seems to go off on holiday and the plotlines really suffer for a week or so. Once I said I was expecting something better, and that night instead of improving the plot they threw in special effects. It didn't really work, but it was the best they could do at short notice, I guess.

I'd keep doing it. I had a friend who had the same kind of dream, she persisted and won 600 quid.

Was it a co-incidence? Read Dunne's An Experiment With Time.

This is classic regression to the mean. The Drunkard's Walk relates a similar perception of responses to punishment and reward from combat flight instructors. Yours sounds more fun, though. :)

That would explain a lot...

The peak special effect was actually TASTING!!! I ate a chocolate bar in the dream and was supposed to taste it. Unfortunately, the flavour was more damp cardboard than yummy chocolate. So not a success. They haven't tried it again.

Did you wake up to find a half eaten cereal box next to you? :D
