When you go to Google today you now get 'inspirational' pictures on the background of Google.com. These are experimental and are only for the next 24 hours, to highlight this new feature.
The only way to switch off these images, or replace them with your own images, is to sign up to Google and use a switch-off button... or just wait 24 hours.
The image I'm looking at right now is a bit too colourful but I dont really want to sign up to Google.

Looks like they're copying BING - but the current image is absolutely horrible (maybe deliberately to force sign-ups to switch it off!)

Signed in, changed background to plain white. No more problems...

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that using Google with a black background won't help the environment that much. Example: I'm using a TFT screen, and the light being kicked out of the back of it is constant...

You are probably right, it won't make that much of a difference, but it certainly couldn't hurt (except for lack of image function on the site).
