Jardine Ellis ring

Postby spooneythegoon » Jun 8th, '10, 17:48

I am thinking of buying a Jardine Ellis ring (http://www.discountmagic.co.uk/product_info.php/products_id/916), but I don't know if I will be able to use it for what I want. Could someone please drop me a PM telling me restrictions etc. I don't mean I want you to tell me the secret, I just want to know a few things about it before I buy. The questions I can state on an open forum are: Can it be used for a linking finger ring effect? Is it good for beginners? Is it versatile?
If someone could PM me with some answers to these questions it would be appreciated. :)

Jardine Ellis Ring

And do look around for the small booklet on the JE Ring by Bertram Milledge; one time President of the Nottingham Guild of Magicians.

Bert won competitions with his JE Ring routines.
Magic Books BP used to stock it.

John Howie's book " routines with the jardine ellis ring" is also an absolute must have.
It's an old magic wand publication, and might take a bit of tracking down, but it does open your eyes to the possibilities.
Also the ring is covered in Gansons art of close up magic. ( vol 1 I think.. but i cant be sure off the top of my head)

Howies book might be available through Martin Breese, as he holds the rights now.

And Sam Dalal, depending on which factory it came from, sold a good working model with a quite informative booklet. I am talking 10 years ago!

a lovely solid brass supreme one,
A supreme Chinese coin, that worked in the same way ( Brass and enamel, and always in my close up case)

There was another book and I just can't grasp the name of it except that it was bright red. I like the Johnson Ellis ring. There is also the hexegonal ring. http://www.perfectmagic.com/p-772-hexag ... -ring.aspx

I've not seen it in person and I'm not sure it would make a difference, but it looks nice.

I've not seen one from that manufacturer but the concept is all the same. Plus the nature of the routine and effects possible puts the ring in the spectators hand and the dirty work (as I mentioned in pm) is in yours so even if it is not perfect you will be fine. Like I mentioned it is either going to find a place in your work or end up in a drawer, those who actually go out and perform with it, and give it a chance end up using it regularly. Just the thumb effect and the ring on rope are really staggering to the spectator, (done right of course).

Jardine Ellis Ring

But please guys:
Do one effect--two if you really must--BUT do not keep the JER going on & on like the Ring on Rope effect.

Some magicians think they have to keep repeating, particularly penetrations, several times;often with different methods over & over again. I think it's just showing off.

The only good reason for this repetition in Ring On Rope was Mark Leveridge's Ring Circus (think it was called) or Competitilon.
3 different magicians doing the trick in 3 different ways.

Agreed, and as far as I'm concerned this is true of any effect. 20 minutes of the dancing cane is not better then a minute. 8 linking rings is not better then two, or possibly three. And for you manipulators out there, a thousand cards is not better then 25 cards, unless you are Julianna Chen.
