How old were you??

Postby Garyz » Apr 27th, '05, 12:01

Just wondering - how old were you when you started/ were introduced into magic.

I started when I was about 17-18, with basic stuff like the T.Tip and the likes. When the T.Tip came thruogh the post I was convinced that people would well be onto it. But in practice, people where absolutely oblivious to it.
This opened my eyes and I started playing with other stuff, but swayed over to the card side of things and here I am.
Im now 21 and Im loving every minute of it.

:)

Just a quick question for you: what sort of progress have you made in 3-4 years and how much time and effort did you put into it ?

Just for interest really.

A fair amount. I carry a pack of cards with me all the time. If your in Liverpool and you see some guy playing with a pack of cards on the bus, say hi.
My g/f is drivin mad, by magic. She used to like it, for a while, but now she hates it, mainly because I practice on her all the time.

Erm.. overall Im practicing all the time.

Why have i offended you by asking for a statistic ?

i still only know about twenty coin sleights and actualy perform only around thirty tricks in total on a rotational basis when i was working.

Bought my first book and started to get into it at roughly 25 I suppose and became a fairly ordinary magician. I didn’t practise enough to get many effects to a standard where I could show them but the acquisition of the knowledge was more enjoyable to be honest.
It sort of went on the backburner for ages then and I finally got back into actually practising the arts seriously about a year ago. I’m 37 now.
Magical mid life crisis ? :?

I started when i was about 4 or 5 with a cheap Paul Daniels magic set, and it just progressed from there. I moved on to proper magic (not marvins magic etc in other words) when i turned 10, i started with things like simple packet tricks but over the space of just about 6 years, and thousands of pounds later, i have built what i would like to call my professional repotoire!

I started out doing the cups and balls as a party piece when I was very young maybe 8 or 9 yrs old. My dad liked card tricks and was very good at cigarette magic.

My grandfather was a hobbist and made his own tricks which he sold to Tam Sheppards the famous magic shop in Glasgow, but he didn't like card magic. I would run errands for him when I was 14 so I had a good grounding in magic when I was young! :)

I started at about 5 with the obligatory PD magic set and progressed very slowly to what I would consider to be a well above average 'lay' magician as a oposed to a serious hobbyist by age 10 then I let it lapse and hardly practiced aprt from vaguuely keeping my false shuffles up to date and doing the od 7s up or triumph. When I was 18 I saw a magician at a party and got back into it more seriously.

Recently, ie the last 7 months or so, I have kept fairly active on the forum but I have probablt only performed a couple of effects in the entire time and I have really let my practice slip, I am thinking of changing my skill level back down to AH rather than SH untill I get the time to practice again and set up some proper routines.

At the age of two, I got a little lame wooden coin box thing.( You know, the one where you push it in and it vanishes). This really really amazed me but no-one else....

From here on, I was taught a few tricks from my father and moved up from there. As i progressed through daniels to marvins, marvins to sankey
my love of magic grew, until I am where I am now.

So I guess you could say I started magic when I was 2! :D

I'm not quite sure how old I was when I got my first magic set. Somewhere between three and six, I think.

I really got into it again when I was about nine. A kid in my school did a show at the end of term (as part of a bigger school production). He was good and had a few items I really liked. Looking back on it, his act was rather too long, but the pacing was good and that rekindled my interest. I eventually found the book that contained one prop that had me completely baffled.

For many years I was a bit 'off and on' with magic, typically getting interested for a couple of years, then having that interest wane a bit. It was Derren Brown's Mind Control series coinciding with 'Monkey Magic' that triggered my latest bout of dabbling and I thnk it's here to stay.

The internet is a wonderful place to share ideas and discuss magic and is potentially incredibly helpful to modern magicians.
