ESP cards

Postby Eshly » Jul 9th, '10, 01:00

So after a 4 month waiting list I finally got Beyond ESP 2... and I cannot read the markings without my glasses :o

Does anyone have any reccomendations for some easy to read, quick peek, ESP cards? Prefrably ones that appear "plain backed", but Bicycle backs are ok.

I ask that you only reccomend them if you have first hand experiance of using them, as eyesight is a very subjective thing.

Edit: Please no one tell Michael I couldn't use his cards, because I was waiting forever for them. They still are really cool :p

I have a deck of Vernet ESP cards which I think are pretty good. It's the same ESP cards used in Symbologic, if you have it.

Steve Short does a wonderful blindfolded card selection routine. At one point, he takes his glasses off, puts on the blindfold, then puts his glasses on over the top of the blindfold.

The audience love it, as they think it's a wonderful gag.
The truth of the matter is he can't see through the blindfold without them.

Could play it off as a gag.

This subject has been raised a few times and this thread is good, while also linking to another.

For those whose eyesight is not the best, or who usually work in dark environments, you may be interested in a routine called ESPycrets. I believe that this will appear in an as yet unreleased book. It works with marked or unmarked cards.

Cards4magic basically has the main choices if you don't like Beyond ESP. I like the beyond esp cards and you will get used to the marking system over time. My problem is the positioning of the markings.

Royal esp cards are probably the ones I use the most. I know people complain about the back design and that the marking system is obvious. I've had spectators trying to spot markings and they've still not noticed. The back design is something magicians worry about, not spectators.

Or you could buy a set from the Rhine centre.

They're a bit expensive for what I imagine are standard bits of card. And I don't know what the backs look like. If they are anything like the originals they will be the same as the Royal Magic ones (which I understand are fairly close replicas).

I too am fine with the Royal Magic cards, as are some others (see the thread I linked to). But some hate them, which is also fine. It's probably good that not everyone is running around with the same cards!

However, and just to support another of your points:

SPECTATORS DO NOT CARE ABOUT CARD BACKS.

so? Wear your glasses then.

as a tip, the way i learned the markings on the effect that this is based on, was to learn one card at a time.

I'm sure there was a thread previously about the advantages of wearing glasses as a mentalist. An excuse to take things out of the case (NW), take a glimpse at billets, etc.
