This is something that it does pay to spend a bit of money on. There are a number of organisations who will produce a professional CV for you and write it up so that you will barely recognise yourself from it.

Then, you have options. I had my base CV last time I was out of work and this was for quite a senior management position. If I applied for anything less than the CV described the rejection came back at the speed of light. So, whilst I continued to apply for jobs equivalent to the one I had lost I also went after lower grade jobs and for this I filleted my CV, in the end I was almost editting the CV individually for each application.

What field of work are you looking for?

you know, I dont know for sure.
I feel that i need to do something that is creative in some way.
that could be in marketing, or events management, or some related industry.

i feel deep down that this is an area that i could feel pasionate about, because it is creative. And if there is one thing i am, Its creative.

It uses imagination... you have to think outside the box... All things that are also needed in magic.

but there always after shed loads of degrees, and qualifications..

which i just dont have, because Ive been too busy trying to earn a crust.

If that's what you really want to do then I say go for it! There are plenty of home study courses and of course the Open University. That's what I'm doing at the moment to get my catering qualifications to open my resturant. It's hard work but more than worth it if it puts you on a path you want to follow.

sorry, and I know there is not much I can say to help. When I lost my job some time ago (obviously before I got this one), I was lost, I don't know how else to say it. I know what you are saying when you mentioned that it is hard to breathe even.

My wife suggested I take some courses, go back to school, perhaps get a masters in my field of study. I couldn't do it, the thought of having to go through school again make me sick to my stomach, but I did investigate and my BA is in Canada, but because I am now in the USA I would have to take some sort of tests to qualify to get into the school despite the fact I would be going in as an adult student. There may have been other schools I could have gotten into without a problem, but I live next to Penn State University, going elsewhere seemed stupid.

However the thought of school did get me thinking, checking out the possibilities of going to school got my brain back in gear focused my attention away from the loss of a job and looking into the future, in turn I was able to breathe again, not much...but just enough.

Never too late to go in a new direction.

One of our IT girls packed in her well paid job to study Wedding Planning with the Open University with a view to opening her own business.

As for "only 5" jobs - shows commitment to the Company!

Employers will probably only spend 30 seconds looking at your CV so make it count and tailor each one for each different job role.

Good Luck

Thanks...

interestingly , on Friday i had a phone call from a job agency offering me an interview.. in fact it was almost a straight offer of a job.

10 grand a year more than I am on at the moment, walking distance to home, more or less what Im doing now....

thats the good stuff......

start straight away, and .... only 5 months contract, no chance of going perm.

I cant accept this yet, because Its not worth loosing my redundency package.

however, this agency are going to bend over backwards to find me something, because they PREFFER people who have only had a few jobs in the past.
As they deal with bonded wharehousing, and secutity firms, they need people who are long term employed, because they are less likely to be crooked. :)

It perked my spirits up for the weekend..

someone out there is looking for me.

That's great news Dale. As for the number of jobs you have had, I have only had 5 in 44 years of working, one lasted 14 years and two of the others lasted 10 years each. As someone who used to regularly be recruiting and interviewing I am afraid I was always suspicious of the pperson who had never held a job for more than a couple od years.

The longest time ive had a job was 17 years.. the shortest time was 1 month.

That 1 month job doesnt appear on the cv, because it was my first job, I hated it.

there isn't much call for a Draymans assistant to a Corona delivery man these days.

I only wish that was still a job, what memories, the Corona man. :D

I have one brief 6 month period which I have expunged from my CV as I know I would not get a reference there! I was briefly self employed befoer that job so just "merged" that period in to the next job.

Well done Dale, it'll all work out right for you one way or another. I had just 6 jobs between 16 and 62, including working at a staff agency, and when I was recruiting I was always wary of any applicant who stayed in a job less that a year, unless there were good reasons. My ideal job? Either a Coronation Programme Seller or a Hansom Cab Lamp Wick Fitter :D !
