basic sleight of hand but still entertaining

Postby spellbound » Jul 22nd, '10, 00:28

This is a vid of me performing at a wedding. There is very little actual sleight of hand as i like to put all the emphasis on the presentation.

In the working magicians world its all about the fun you can give and not methods.Anyone agree/disagree?

Nice video and I rather like your patter.

When it comes to the first effect, how about seperating the reveal of the folded up card and its value? Reveal the folded card and then its value.
Most laymen will 'get' how the card got there in your hands IMHO so only revealing the identity of the card after that serves as a kicker. As it stands I felt the revelation of the card's value was somehow lost/devalued in the reveal. Just my tuppence worth.

EDIT: Does this post not belong in Forum of Visual Curiosities?

A very, very nice routine, I love your invisible card plot.

One small criticism - you put the card back into the ID face down after you finished the routine. There is a way to put the card back in face up (to match all the other cards) and close the spread and be able to turn it back face down.

Other than that I loved it, your a natural entertainer

Somehow I didn't see this question the first time around. Can't agree more. Effect is everything. Your audience's perception and ultimately, their enjoyment of a trick or effect is the most important thing. Beyond that, really, who cares how it's achieved? Other than other magi  .

Oh, on second thoughts, I can disagree a little. This doesn't (or at least shouldn't) apply to just the working magician!

I've stated over and over again, the method one uses to achieve something doesn't matter in regards to the audience. Always use the simplest, easiest method for you, that way you can concentrate on presentation. After all we don't entertain with method, we entertain with presentation, and if you are not entertaining then get out of the game.

Thanks guys and hello paul.I've been hearing good things about you lately.I think i've gone full circle with my magic. When i first started over 25 years ago i used basics then as i learnt more advanced material i would use that but it did nothing to improve audience reaction in fact in some effects it became too complicated to follow especially if they have been drinking. Now it's the KISS principle all the way.

Excellent stuff. The thing that is most impressive is the interaction with the audience...something that is often overlooked.

Actually, that is the second most impressive thing...the first is how you managed to perform with those god awful Waddingtons! :P

Very entertained audience and a very nice, simple but effective effect. I really did enjoy myself watching that video, very nice.
