So I was performing at one of my residencies last night and having a pretty good time. One of the waiters always asks me to show him a trick and so last night I performed the standard ID on him.
Upon turning his 'merely thought of' card over he told me that was the best card trick I'd ever shown him.

I know how strong an effect the ID can be, but for some reason this comment irked me a little as I've spent so many years perfecting diabolical sleight of hand. Most of the tricks I've shown my waiter friend over the course have been some of my best sleight of hand tricks, yet the ID is the one he's going to remember.
I know this is only one man's opinion, but has anyway else ever experienced the same kind of scenerio? In the spectator's mind, how does the ID (for example) compare to sleight of hand effects such as ambitious card, triumph or torn and restored?
Sure, the spectator doesn't (and shouldn't) know whether you're using sleight of hand, gimmicks or whatever, but there was something pretty awakening for me to think that a trick costing around a fiver that can be performed well with a little bit of practice was more impressive than the tricks that have taken me years to learn.
I guess you have to take the rough with the smooth sometimes...
