Bristol Day of Magic No 43 (Sunday 11th May 2003)
Report from Paul Preager
Arrangements are now well in hand to our 43rd Day of Magic at the Winter Gardens in Weston Super Mare on Sunday May 11th.
The organising committee has been beavering away for many months putting together a line-up of artists and it certainly doesn't get any easier! So to put you out of your misery here is what you can look forward to.
Our featured lecturer and performer from the USA will be Eugene Burger. For the uninitiated Eugene has long been a considered a 'Guru' in the world of magic. Now this may have something to do with his distinctive beard in which case Simon Lane is definitely on the right track! He has written numerous books including ''The Experience of Magic" and "The Performance of Close-up Magic" and is considered one of the foremost teachers of 'magical wisdom' as well as having a unique style of performing close-up magic.
Our children's magic lecture will be given by Paul Megram also known as Colonel Custard who is one of the busiest professional children's entertainers in the country and won the UK Children's Entertainer of the Year at the Blackpool convention.
Our close-up sessions will feature Eugene Burger, Mark Shortland (last year's IBM close-up winner). Jon van der Put an up
and coming young close-up expert from the Magic Circle, and to be confirmed when he returns from his USA lecture tour, a return visit from Mark Mason.
The 20 or so dealers will feature many of the regulars from around the country as well as our own second hand stand for those bargains. You can also bring along your unwanted items to sell. See Paul MacLeavy for further details.
Our Gala show will be compered by Bizarre Bath Walk Tour Guide and regular convention compere Noel Britten. Young Magician of the Year 'Obleo' opens the show with his well themed act followed by the comedy of Terry Herbert in his regular stand-up cabaret act. one of the few UK magicians to feature on the Paul Daniels Show. Peter Wardall was featured on the Magic Circle's Christmas Show with his Street magic act and has one of the most entertaining Cups and Balls routines around. Making a return visit is Brian Sefton with his immaculate dove and manipulation act followed by the unpredictable and hilarious John Archer one of the funniest magicians around at the moment. Finishing our show will be the superb duo Carl Dean and Claudine featuring their well known act and illusions.
For the benefit of newer members (of which there seem to be a healthy influx in the last few years) the Bristol Day of Magic began in 1960 and has been held in various venues around Bristol including the old Wills Hall in Bedminster (now Asda!), Filton High School and the Armstrong Hall Thornbury. In 1995 with growing numbers we de-camped to Weston Super Mare's Winter Gardens and Playhouse Theatre probably one of the best mid-sized convention venues in the country. Our attendances have grown in recent years and our target for 2003 is 500 of which we would like Bristol members to reach 50. Last year our members totalled 47 so it only needs 3 more! Strangely a few members have never once attended the convention at Weston! The Evening show is also a great family show so bring the family and friends for an evening of magical entertainment. If every member who came could sell just 2 extra gala show tickets each we would have no problem selling out at the Playhouse.
We are considering the possibility of a "night before" lecture with Eugene Burger if we can find a suitable venue in Bristol mainly for local magicians. This would be a completely different lecture from the Sunday lecture.
Finally we will need three close-up room hosts to introduce our close-up sessions so if you want to volunteer please see Mandy Farrell. before she sees you! Or, if you want to help with anything else on the Day please see myself, Mandy or Barry Savage. Don't all rush at once now!
