Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Well the first brief meeting went well yesterday lunchtime.

About 15 kids (all boys) turned up. Some had magic sets other were just interested to find out more. Two staff turned up too!

I showed them 'cups and balls' and 'twisting the aces' along with a couple of video clips showing some trad. stage magic. (No exposure)

I also went heavy on the magicians code

So we decided that the club will meet every Wednesday after school. (Starting after the half term break) We are going to work our way through the first two parts of the 'Mark Wilson Course'. No doubt quite a few will drop out as the weeks progress but those that stay and prove their worth can start on the Royal Road.

I'll let you know how the first full meeting goes.

Rich

If you belong to the SAM they have a great book that they give away on teaching magic to children. Going through Mark Wilson's book is also a good idea.

Anyway you dice it or slice it doing what you are doing is wonderful.

Sounds like GREAT idea! I wish there had been something like this when I was in school!

James, 19, Lifelong student of magic and will carry on learning for the rest of my days if I'm a very lucky boy.

I know it's been a while but just to bring you up to speed the magic club is going very, very well.

The 15 lads dropped down to 8 and they have been working through the cards and rope sections of the Mark Wilson course. Some have now invested in a TT and have posted some of their offerings on YouTube!

After the summer break I'm going to introduce a couple of the older and more dedicated ones to the Royal Road.

And with a Christmas show in the pipeline ...

That sounds really positive. And you always get an initial drop-out rate with anything. Well done!

Fantastic to hear Richard. This is the kind of thing local newspapers love to hear about, it makes a change from all the negative stuff they have to print.

Time Magazines Person Of The Year 2006.

Superb stuff Richard,
Have any of your pupils joined any other Magic club?
Sound like you are all enjoying your self anyway.
Keep up the good work.

This is great stuff!! 8 is a good number to work with :-)

Keep up with the updates... looking forward to hearing about the Xmas show! :-)

I'd also echo to comment above about local newspaper involvment - get the press down, this is exactly the stuff they'd love... especially tying in with the new Harry Potter film being released in December. I can see the headline now - "HOGWARTS IN TAMWORTH"!!!

Thanks again for the kind words from you all.

...and yes, I promise to keep Talk Magic updated a little more often.

Off now to write a press release for the local rag....
