I've been interested in magic for a long time, and always wanted to do some so took the plunge and found a website to buy tricks etc. Can anyone suggest a "Teach yourself magic" book and also as someone who can't shuffle a deck of cards without dropping them is the cups and balls routine easy to do??

Hi and welcome! There are lots of books to chose from so perhaps the best thing would be to browse through the Reviews section or use the Search function to get closer to what you need. Royal Road to Card Magic is the usual starting point although it can be a bit dry at times compared to more modern books.

Thanks for the advice. Regarding the cups and balls, is that me "running before I can walk" or can a total novice learn it with hours and hours of practice??

Could I suggest the creation of a sticky for beginners? The same question are coming up all the time and we could point newcomers to that particular topic...

Cups and Balls is taught in loads of books, DVDs etc. Michael Ammar has a lot to say about it in his book, The Magic of Michael Ammar, but, as well as Searching here on TM, if you do a Google search with Cups and Balls as the query, you'll see lots more!

If you're interested in finding out about cups and balls (and let's face it, anyone who has seen any part of it done is interested in it...), then I'd recommend you buy a copy of the latest issue of magicseen magazine. It's got a few pages dedicated to the cups and balls.

As to whether it is easy or not... Yes and no. It's a routine that can be as ambitious or as simple as you like. Rather than buy a Cups and Balls Specific DVD, spend your money on Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. If I remember rightly (I don't have it to hand...), it has a chapter dedicated to the Cups and Balls, and is probably a best buy for someone like yourself starting out as it truly is a compendium of outstanding magic. It offers a beginner a whole variety of magic to learn, and it is all quality magic, too.
