Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

I keep trying to tell people, to keep it simple. Magic is not method. We don't perform method. Seeing as the spectator is unware of method, what difference does it make on the method used.

I know the purists out there will disagree, but why kill yourself on a complicated method when a double face card will work and work so much easier. There are a zillion ways to get the card out of the deck if you need too. The audience doesn't know the difference if you use a fancy turn over or a double face card. (just an example folks) so why kill yourself? If you want to use the fancy method and it works for you then go ahead, but in actual performance, where your reputation is on the line. Where you are being paid big money. Why make life difficult?

No worries though, eventually you will figure it out.

Paul Daniels is a big fan of a system which he calls "Kiss a tit!"

K.I.S.S.A.T.I.T

He says it's an acronym which stands for "Keep It Simple, Stupid, And Think It Through"

I once heard (or, more likely, read) that not all of the simple stuff is always good, BUT most of the good stuff is ALWAYS simple!

I think yours is actually the purist approach. And I agree with you completely.

I've just been watching Docc Hilford's "Monster Mentalism" series of DVDs. They're practically a masterclass on how to take simple classic effects and modify or update them to suit your own particular needs. (And, where possible, to simplify them even more!) Very inspirational.
