I have been doing magic for about a year now (although not particularly seriously, just been dabbling and taking my time), and performing to a few friends and family. Although I am very grateful to have an audience that enjoys my magic, I would like to expand and try performing to a greater variety of people. The problem is, I am fairly young, which means I have an opportunity to perform almost everyday at school, but I am somewhat limited, as my favorite magic is cards really, and they aren't allowed (although I do play some card games with friends at school occasionally, so I perform then), and I'm not good or old enough to take it to the streets. Any suggestions?

What age have you got to be to perform on the streets then?
Get yourself out there,if you are old enough and good enough for school friends and family,you are old enough to try your luck on the streets.
Remember keep it simple to start off with,untill you get your confidence up.

I'm always a bit baffled to this 'taking it to the streets'. Surely only people on DVD's (who want to sell their DVD's) perform on the streets to seem cool? I've seen a few magicians 'busk' on the street but that's about it. And they weren't cool, they were acting a bit daft and shouting a lot.

I've never took it 'on the streets'. The streets are cold and wet and there are some scary people on the streets. Perform indoors. Much better. Warmer and far more comfy.

I must admit that the main reason I said i was too young to perform on the streets is because at my age, i would probably just look like a total pr*ck

Anyone know any nice warm places to get experience with performing to new people?

My advice is to join a local magic club. If you join a decent local club, there will be supportive magicians that you will be able to perform too. A decent local club will also put on competitions (close up or stage) and you can start performing for these. Also some clubs put on gigs for charities.

You could also contact old folks homes or hospitals. These places are always grateful for any entertainers. This way you perform for free and you get the experience.

If you know anyone, either friends or family who own restaurants, ask them if you can perform in there one night, free of charge because you want the experience.

If you do decide to join a club just make sure it's a decent one with the minimum of infighting (there's always some!) and where everyone is friendly and supportive.

Where are you at? I am having the same problem, very difficult to get audiences, haven't even had time to think about nerves or confidence or anything like that!

I'm in a tiny village in Cheshire. I used to have a relative in an old folks home, and have played the trumpet there before, so they may let me perform for free. The other main problem with "street magic" where I live is theres no-one out there
