Is this wrong?

Postby AndyRegs » May 6th, '05, 12:54

I have been working on a version of OOTW. Basically, I saw Derren Browns excellent version, and not wanting to completely rip it off, I mostly ripped it off! I haven't done this for anyone except my fiance and brothers yet, as I'm not sure if it is in bad taste. I'm not sure, so I thought I'd make a post and let you all decide!

The magician shows a pile of laminated pictures of people cut out of newspapers, of all different sizes, some colour, some black and white.
He talks about how although we shouldn't all judge a book by its cover, we all make judgements about people as soon as we see them, and asks the spec to separate the pictures into two piles, depending on whether they get a good or bad feeling about them.

Once this has been done, the magician explains that the photos were obviously cut from newspapers, and that newspapers only report on people if they have done something extremely bad, or something extremely good. Basically the saints and sinners in the world.

THe magician then turns each picture over to reveal not only the word 'saint' written in large writing across the backs of one pile, and 'sinner' accross the backs of the other, but also the first paragraph of the story out of the paper describing what they did.

This could really freak people out. But is it right????

You are the jury...you decide!

Its just a working of out of this world, with a bit of thought, and inspiration from derren brown, which can be bought from most magic stores. If you are not aware of it, the original version is done with a pack of cards which the spec separates into reds and blacks without looking at the faces.

Yea, this sounds like great idea, good luck with developing it and let us know how you get on.

Sounds good - how many pictures do you use?

I only have 20 at the moment. I am looking to have double that when I start performing it properly. THe big problem with this is that I can't use famous people/criminals, and need people who look a bit normal. Trouble is, the papers always manage to find/use the photo of criminals looking as dodgy as possible. I'm getting there, but very slowly.

There's an opportunity here - how about asking TM members to submit their photos? Purely voluntary of course but you'd certainly know that they were all willing volunteers. You could still use real newspaper stories but the faces will have changed to protect the 'innocent'.

Also, local papers might be a good source for "normal" people.

Hmmm, you ought to read The Birmingham Evening Mail - a full bunch of weirdos in every issue!

Excellent idea,

It's a shame on the DB one that the cameras were on their faces all the time while the sleights were going on, I'm sure DB is experienced enough to be able to achieve the effect in full view! Plus I would love to have seen how he did those sleights (I have it on DVD).

Mandrake, if you think that's weird (and it is) take a look at the Sunday Paper (Mail) - gosh, it makes me look normal (and that is saying something!!!).

Well, would you rather have some wag at the back go "I know how that's done!" or a sea of frozen faces believing in you? Set out to frighten and you'll amaze with a slightly weird aftertaste. I speak as one recently banned from playing with one friend's mind. She's turning into a great advert!

Im not sure how similar my handling is to derrens. It is very simple, and the only way I can think of for making the handling smooth, without having to 'change things around' half way through.

Does anyone know if the Devils Picturebook is available on DVD or is it just videotape?
I emailed the support section on DB' site but haven't had a reply as they're on tour.
