I have been playing around with magic now for around 2 years on and off and have a great love for the art. most tricks that come up i can learn one way or another these tricks have earned me some good cash on my travels. i never reveal my tricks and love to learn new things for my act. however this dark force has entered my world in the name of Derren Brown the saviour of modern magic and mentalism thrusting it into the mainstream like a no one has done before, making people like david blane look like a young paul daniels (sorry paul). i hate not knowing how things work, especially when it freaks me out. what frustrates me is its very hard to learn his act i mean there are books all over the place that explain nlp and other systems but, how can you really get an act as amazing as that? is it possible? i know its a mixture of body reading, pychology, hypnosis amoung other things. if there were a collage you could go to, or something you can join to learn this stuff i would be there like yesterday. does anybody know anywhere where i can learn this for my act, are there books dvds around that go further than the basic mentalist nlp thing. i would love to know the science behind this great mans act, how does he do the horse racing trick although i have an idea or the arcade game trick how can a few flashes put someone under or even the scary street tricks where he gets one person to say anothers address. these are things i must sus out before i die. please someone must know something...

a desperate man

if you can help in anyway email me on wizebuddha@hotmail.com

(Mr moderator i hope i dident break any rules on your site talking about nlp and all that)

You say you have earned some good cash on your travels with tricks........Do you mean you earn money as an entertainer?

Also anyone with a great love of the art...would get their own act not try to pinch Derren Brown's act.........

Derren Brown has been doing magic a long time, he didn't just wake up one morning and be the entertainer he is today.....

The following goes for anyone in my humble opinion.....if anyone wants to be anywhere near as good as Derren Brown.....it will take years of dedication to the art and the answer isn't just waiting to be read a book or manuscript or there is no secret formula that will instantly change you into a fantastic mentalist and brilliant performer like Derren Brown.......

I would say that part of what Derren Brown does and some of the methods he uses are written up but there is more to Derren than what is written in any book.

Anyone who thinks they can simply pick up a book or read a manuscript and it will change them instantly into another Derren Brown is dreaming and until all the young or old Derren Brown wannabees realise this they will never be anything like Derren Brown.

Just my opinion.....! :)

What makes Derren Brown stand out is his unique style. You will never be able to have as much success by copying what has already been done.

This doesn't mean that learning other people's stuff is not a great way to progress, but at one stage, if you want to push things further, you'll want to really personalise your own style... I think this comes progressively as times passes and if you are dedicated.

I agree!

Just when you're getting over one almighty kick in the gut from Derren, he goes and changes shoes and then kicks you again!

if you want to amaze then do some of the oldest stuff in your own style. There is nothing new out there, just old stuff improved (just like my record collection lol)

You cant beat classics like cups and balls, cut and restored ropes, vanishe etc. Just go forth and perform in your own style.

Myself I try to do magic with everyday objects. I love paddles and ropes(no its not a fetish) lol. If someone is great at something, EG Derren Brown, dont try and be better at his act, try something different be yourself. If you're any good you will find something people will talk about for years to come.

ok ill stop rambling now

Also, just because derren makes you believe that he is using nlp/psychology, it doesn't mean he is actually doing that. Many of his effects are very old in origins, but with derrens presentation. I would concentrate on this aspect to start off with. You can make people think you have these psychological tools available to yourself, when you are just performing classic "magic/mentalism". Read absolute magic by derren brown for an idea of his thinking behind his magic. It is NOT a book of tricks though, so read the review on this site first.
