As the Microsoft guru can you help me please.

I have really high latency on the first hop to my router (sitting at up 90ms instead of 1 or 2ms). My ISP will not investigate any further the speed issues I am suffering until I fix this latency issue.

I have tried high auto-tuning, restricted auto tuning and disabled auto tuning but still getting high latencies.

Using Windows 7 and connected via ethernet to a TG 585.

I need to fix the latency or else my ISP will give up and blame my PC when it's not entirely my PC at fault :(

I'm not Klangster but...

Possibly this is an MTU issue.

Google ADSL and MTU to find out more.

Here's a link to get you started.

EDIT: I know the page in question talks about certain sites not being available, but that's just part of the problem.

If it helps, not only didn't I understand the answer, I didn't understand the question.

It probably doesn't help much...

Did you scan down the page to the bit headed, "~ Tweak your PC"?

I'd agree that tweaking your MTU is probably a good place to start and the DrTCP utility that's mentioned in that link is a good util. (http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/tweak2.htm) - failing that you can use the 'netsh' command to manually configure your settings but I'd recommend DrTCP (as I've heard reports that it works nicely on Win7 too!)

Just in case anyone else is following, here's a PM I sent to JordanC

"have a look at the DrTCP utility which is a common util to resize MTU. An MTU is, essentially, the maximum size of a network packet that can be sent up the network stack.

Usually a large packet is prefereable because it means more data can be transferred in one go however large packets are also problematic in the presence of communications errors. Corruption of a single bit in a packet requires that the entire packet be retransmitted.

There is also a command line utility called netsh that can be used to view and change your MTU size. Open up a command prompt and use this command to list the adapters and their current MTU:

netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces

and then the following to alter the required setting:

netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "WHATEVER YOUR INTERFACE IS CALLED" mtu=xxxx store=persistent

Then restart your computer..."

It might also be something as innocuous as a dodgy cable - also worth checking that the router and Network Card are set to that same duplex mode and speed...

EDIT - I've just found that I didn't get DrTCP to run on Win7 (although others claim to have successfully done so!). So, I'd recommend using the 'netsh' approach - FYI my MTU is set at 1500, although that is provided purely as a guide. I am on Virgin and that setting seems to work well for me )

so - your interface will be called 'Local Area Connection'

You can also try the suggestions mentioned here:

http://lifeandcode.net/2009/05/reduce-g ... -or-vista/

Howevver, please note that editing the Registry directly is NOT supported by Microsoft - so TREAD CAREFULLY!!

Connect to the admin account on your router from your web browser. It'll be your default gateway address. If not port 80, then port 443.

The ping time keep[s being variable, it has gone from 26 down to 9 and now back up to 90 even after the registry hack.

I need to get this sorted or my ISP will just fob me off :(
