OK guys, I just bought myself a shiny new digital camcorder. It's an Agfa APDV-1019, which is full HD up to 1080, touchscreen, in short it's gorgeous.
Only thing, it records in H.264 (AVI) files, which are a nightmare to do anything with. The CD that came with it is useless, and I even tried going to the wensite to download the software, except the company makes no reference at all to that specific suite in any way on their entire product range or support pages. Does anybody know of any free (or not too expensive) video editing software to download over the internet, capable of giving me creative freedom of my footage, and also able to export to at least 720 resolution.

Any of the entry-level editors out there will handle your footage.

I personally like Adobe Premiere Elements in this price range, as it affords a lot of versatility and control.

But you might find Pinnacle Studio or Corel VideoStudio more intuitive. It all depends on how much you plan to dissect the media while editing it.

Am I totally blind of does windows 7 not have a video editor? I'm sure my last laptop did; I'm sure I used it to make some complete c*** (not the best).

(the eagle eyed people out there may have noticed I'm not the most technically minded person on the boards)

I've tried most edit suites, but I always end up going back to Edit Studio - at the moment it's at version 6.

Premiere Elements is good, but there's a steeper learning curve.

Not sure about W7, though both XP and Vista had Windows Movie Maker depending on the version of XP/Vista you have (Home, Premium, blah)

Probably dependant on what version of W7 you have, just like XP and Vista. Not that I'm saying you're tight Lawrence

Adobe Premiere Elements is a pretty nice bit of software for its price, am using it to chop up some of my own vid footage at the moment. It's editing is tighter than WMM and the titling options are way ahead too. There's no doubt more wonderful advantages that I'm not aware of, I only get to tinker with it on a friend's PC though I think I'll be investing in it myself as soon as I start shooting more than one small live show.

It's now a free download from Microsoft. Part of the Live! package, in fact (along with Messenger etc).

I'd tell my missus that we've been together for so long precisely because I *don't* wear my glasses - but it's more likely to be the other way around...

For straightforward conversion of one video format to another, I mostly use Ultra Video Converter. It costs about $35, which includes support and upgrades for life. It handles the major formats, including DVD-ready MPEG in both PAL and NTSC, and has a very friendly interface.

RADTools is a pro studio that can convert nearly anything to nearly anything. RAD is the leading maker of video software for games, so they know their stuff. RADTools is free, but you're encouraged to donate $10 if you can. The interface is a bit daunting, but should be easy enough once you get used to it. (I haven't used it enough to be familiar with it yet.)

viDrop is a good freeware converter, especially if you want to put your video on a portable player, as it can cope with pretty much any MP4 requirements. It's the only thing I've found that can output files my no-brand Rockchip player can use. It's not very friendly, though -- you need to be happy about tweaking options and possibly using some trial-and-error.

For actual film editing, not just converting, I use Serif MoviePlus. My own version is outdated, and lately I've been drooling over the new version. All Serif software is very high to professional quality, and for £60 it's a bargain. I'd get the various add-ons as well.

For conversion I recently found Format Factory (www.formatoz.com) which does pretty much everything very well. Like many of these apps it seems to be a front end for ffmpeg, but the list of presets for almost evey mobile device out there is staggering!
