comedy linking rings routine

Postby devilstick Peat » Oct 6th, '10, 09:31

I'm sure this has already been asked somewhere, but as a junior member (god it's so long since I've been called a "junior") it was probably posted before my time and I cant find it anywhere, so I thought I'd ask here.
Is there a DVD explaining a comedy Chinese linking ring routine using anything up to 8 rings? (and please, don't just say yes)

This is my favourite, from Whit Haydn

It can be purchased directly from his store:

Nice routine - but some monstrous flashing two thirds of the way through. It got the biggest laugh of the routine, but I'm sure it wasn't intentional.

The World's Greatest Magic Linking Rings dvd has got two (I think) comedy routines on it, as well as a few others.

I haven't got my copy in front of me at the moment, so I can't tell you which performers they are. I do know one has a five ring routine, though I think the other is an eight ring version.

As far as a comedy linking ring routine go, you can't do better than Whit Haydn's. It's funny, uses an audience participant, and is entertaining. It doesn't go on for too long and bore the pants off of the audience like so many other routines.

I use this with great success. Highly recommended!

make sure you dont fall into the trap of copying existing routines. The Daniels confidence routine for example ( which i believe was either bought, or gifted to Doug Henning .. see youtube)

I find that most of the standard gags work, " no hole, except the ruddy big one in the middle.. that kind of thing.
Cheesy yes.. butthey get a laugh.

Look also at Richard Ross. A clasical linking ring routine, with some touches of comedy thrown in.

Vernons rings can be seen here.....

the late, great Richard Ross...... ( I adored this act more than i can say!!)

he gets the laughs, without telling a joke.. its all in the face, and body.

Galina.. ok nothing funny. But if a linking rings act can get you slightly sexualy aroused, its always worth sharing..

I used the L&L dvd and took little pieces that I liked from each routine, put them together and added my own comedic presentation.

Ditto.

I agree with Dale. The Linking Rings is much like the Cups & balls in my opinion, as most of the fun comes from playing with the props, sleights and sequences to create a routine that is, ultimately, yours.

Simply using a published routine is no fun at all.

Throw 6 of the rings away and go with a 2 ring routine, three at the most. four if you are giving the spectator two.

That's what I love about the L&L DVDs, they give you so many different ideas and presentations that you can pick and choose as you like.

That's exactly what I did when I put together my sponge bunny routine, took different bits that I liked from all over the place, played with them and put them all together to make a routine that's mine.
