street magic on a stage

Postby magicman98 » Oct 9th, '10, 18:27

Hi there iv'e applied for britains got talent and i know what sort of style of act it is i want to do as iv'e had some experience in this field going around bars and pubs. Ive got some good reactions to my tricks.

I want to do a street magic style act with cards etc and blend it in with some small breakdancing moves. I was thinking like some flourishes and shuffles with a dance move mixed together along to some music

I don't know how well this kind of stuff works on a stage but ive seen other magicians do it so im sure i could make it work.

I know you would have to stand about 10ft away but is that a problem when working with cards and stuff presuming you pull them off nicely, short and sweet. Even a sweden magician on swedens got talent got through with his card act and went on to win it. so there's proof that it all works.

Also has anyone got any ideas on what tricks i could perform that doesent involve using the judges like picking a card signing them etc as i know this could take up time in a very short time scale. do you get 3 mins or 2 mins cause i need to keep it short and sweet.

Yeah something a bit like that but better. i want to actually do tricks with the cards and mix them with the moves. rather than just throwing them on the floor. which i thought was a bit silly. now wheres the magic in that. but thats just me. i dident like the clothing style so much either.

although he got through just about. but piers morgan dident seem to like it as much as the others. i think becuase hes seen dynamo perform before and ive met him and he knows hes seen better.

I don't mean to be well... mean here, but I wouldn't reccomend doing card tricks on stage, unless you go for something like T.O.D. Try and get something as visual as possible, they don't seem to have a very large attention span.

Also, hate to say it, but I doubt even Derren Brown would make it through to the finals, let alone Dynamo.

By all means go for it, but I am just giving you a few of my own thoughts on it, as I contemplated it myself.

Another thing, is that Piers and Simon are allegedly not there next year, being replaced by James Corden :( and Peter Kay :? . So you may want to rethink anything you do?

No way would I have thought that would happen. It would completely change the show, and I don't think for the better either.
It would just be a comedy stand off between the two, and there would also be no mean one. Which I think the panel needs. (Piers being the mean one in Americas Got Talent, as Simon does not judge that one).

As for the act; if you can keep your cards in your hand while dancing and performing flushes, then you may get away with it. But don't let it ruin your magic career (either one you may have now, or your future).

Make the cards appear. Most impressive flourish in the book, because it's not a flourish.

Wait a minute... I just watched that video, and that is actually a carbon copy.
Please don't do that, be you.
If you are similar to Dynamo then change it! Take the oppurtunity to do something creative and original. Look what it did for him! :)

In terms of would card effects you could do without them being selected, I couldn't begin to think. You could always try Named Card to Pocket, or something like an Index?

Did you notice the biggest cheers and applause were for the dance moves, not the magic? I would suggest either do one or the other. And unless you magic is very strong, then I suggest it be the dancing you go for.

Sounds like a Dynamo knock-off act to me.

I'll mention it here, as I suspect no one will notice. I think that a strongman act could be very successful on BGT. I'm talking about the sort of semi-real tricks that circus strongmen do, but ideally performed by someone quite young.

Also, a modern day "Georgia Wonder" act could grab the public's imagination. The sad thing is, there would certainly be smart-@r$e magicians queuing up to expose the methods, rather than letting the act have its day.

I still haven't forgetten the couple of sad-case magicians on Digital Spy who were showing off how much they knew, hinting about things in one of Derren's broadcast stage shows, then giving the details to (lay) people via PM. Irrespective of your views on exposure, I can't see how anyone could support people giving away another performer's secrets purely to ingratiate themselves with others online and to make themselves look clever.

I'm not sure cards would work on BGT - on the Sweden programme, the guy had a much more close up set up (not such a big stage) and it was perfect.

If you're still going to do it then good luck, check out dan and dave for some visual flourishy type tricks - mega difficult, but fits the criteria.

I'm not completely hip to the jive of BGT's entire audition library, but has anyone actually tried something like Cups and Balls or the "Quick and Snappy and simple for the audience to follow because we're MTV gen-x innit"* Chop Cup at all?

(* I love the Chop Cup, this statement is purely to take the michael out of modern day talent contests...)
