Seriously though I saw this trick the other day and I thought what a totally inappropriate and insensitive magic trick to be selling when there are currently serious knife problems in certain areas of the country.
My thoughts exactly when I saw this. It's going to be difficult in small group work also they are over the legal blade limit to carry on you. You'll be ok carrying them in your box. If you were doing it on stage or from a distance I think you'll be fine and can make up some story that you needed a knife for some job and then take them out.

I think Whit Haydn has a three card monte routine in which he uses a knife to cut a card to make it unique.

Rope / string magic could also justify the use of a knife.

Anything that justifies cutting something I guess gives you a justification for getting a knife out of your pocket?

I carry. A two inch folding blade most of the time for work, there's so many reasons you could bring one into play. Cutting a card, produce an apple and cut in half and make it whole again, cut a ribbon or tape, or opening a sealed box. Or just say I need a knife for my next trick has anyone got one? Answer should be NO, then you could say it's a good job I brought my own. If they say yes they would be a little silly but just say I better use my own. You could say something after like remember not to carry knifes on you .....! I think I'd just say I'm going to use a knife then remove it from an inside jacket pocket not my trouser pocket. Looks better.

Colour Changing Knives came about because back int eh days most people carried around small pocket knives with them, whittling, hobbies etc. It was just one of those things, like bowler hats.
It was an everyday item that could be used with the always wonderful paddle move wothout having to carry around and explain why you have a paddle.

Nowadays, we really should be looking to develop other ideas along this line. As mentioned, flash drives are one idea, Lee Smith has a lovely routine with bic lighters that's a joy to watch. I do it with Biro's that have lettering along one side

Time Magazines Person Of The Year 2006.
