I have a Sony eReader which I love and use every day!
PDF's are a bit sketchy though if they are an image (like much of the stuff on TLP) however if they are a glorified text document it displays fine.
I do not even notice the background screen colour and although there is a very, very slight screen lag when you "turn" the page, it just becomes second nature to "turn" a couple of words before then end, which ironically makes it quicker than turning a page on a normal book. As stated above the number of words per page can be varied with the zoom, I tend to have it on medium if reading in lower light levels but the number of words per page are about the same as a book if reading in normal light on the small setting.
The Sony eReader has no facility to enter passwords though, so password protected PDF's cannot be viewed on it, can you view them on the Kindle?
