Devils Hank

Postby jugglemonkey » Dec 1st, '10, 14:50

Hi All,

Im looking at either buying or making a Hank for vanishing small objects i.e. coins/watches.
Ideally I would like to make it. Has anyone got any tips on materials/construction along with any specific types pros and cons?.
At the moment I'm thinking of making a devil's hank. Is this similar to the Vanishing Hank in Mark Wilsons book? Is it also in Tarbell?

Thanks in advance!

Yes there is two different types, a version in Tarbell's which is easily made but has some odd handling and another version described by Hoffman which is more convincingly handled but harder to stitch together so it looks right.

My wife has made me two versions of the one in Mark Wislons book, one to vanish coins and one to vanish a ring. I use them regularly in my table hopping set.

I can'tvouch for how easy / difficult they were to make, but I will ask Mrs Wizz

what kind of things do you want to vanish? I ask because yesterday i took delivery of Pat Pages Hanky panky cloth, which has some huge advantages over the traditional devils hank.
Also for your conjsideration, is the mephisto hank, which operates in the same way as the standard devils hank, but contaings an internal pocket, which creates a no sag feature, and also makes retreval much, much easier. I also have a supreme vanishing hank, which was created specificaly for making balls, or an egg go from the palm of the hand. Ive made up a coin vanishing hank, which is almost examinable too. And takes about 5 minutes to make, 3 or those minutes, spent threading the needle to stitch it .
t
you also have the vanisher with the fake, for vanishing glasses, or dice..

There is another Bob Cassidy came up with that his wife used to make long ago. While they are no longer available commercially, the plan for them and their basic handling (originally designed for use with billets in a Q&A act) can be found in his "One Man Billet Act" (I think that's the right one).

I've made up a few of them and used them on and off over the years; for how & why they were developed for use, they are great!

Is that the plain white one with the temporary, removable pocket? If so, I used to have one of those.

no, Its a flowery fabric, with a wired hole right in the middle. Just dropping the hank onto a ball, automaticaly places the ball inside. Whisking the cloth off your hand ( or indeed a spectators) scoops the ball up, and away. Its quite clever.

and by gathering up the corners, the ball falls to the hole, and can be produced.

Gotcha. The one I had used a large bag that was connected to the hanky via a ribbon and stud popper. You could disappear/appear a deck of cards etc, and hand out the hanky for examination if you wanted.

I've often thought about buying one of these, but for use mainly as a f**** bag rather than as a vanisher.

That is so you. Mine was white and looked like something you'd buy from M&S in a ten-pack.

ive handled one of the Fabric mainipulation ones, and it doesnt come close to the Supreme made Mephisto hank. Its no sag inner bag hides everything, and the two corners contain small plastic counters, so you can always feel the right edge to have facing upwards.
I added a small paperclip just inside the opening, so that it can be used to switch a packet of billets, after its been used to force if you want.
ive been using it most shows, since i was 18, and it shows no sign of wear and tear.
Its made from heavy silky polyester fabric. they also sold it in cotton, and i own one of thoise too, as a spare. but ive never had to use it in action.
