No getting away from the Big Green Monster

Postby SpareJoker » Dec 17th, '10, 13:30

Heads up for anyone thinking of joining the Tragic Cafe:

There is no facility whatsoever to delete an account. Also, the mods refuse to delete an account.

Any posts asking how to delete an account are deleted.

There is no mention of this in any of their FAQ's.

You have been warned.

That should be an easy matter. Just tell them that you are Mark Lewis. Your account will be deleted immediately.
Or simply say outrageous things or use profanity in every post or say rude things about Jesus and they will ban you.
Or if you are too timid to do any of this you can at least lodge a complaint in their "speak to the manager" section. You will at least get their reply explaining themselves.

Yeah, I tried asking.

The reply was 'We can't be arsed' ("...it would take too long...")

Ah well, no biggie. The only thing I will miss is having a good laugh at the Gospel section. The way those guys tie themselves up in knots ('Are Playing Cards Evil?') is freakin' hilarious.

I don't see how this is a problem. If you don't like the cafe just don't sign in again. Am I missing something?

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Aside from Data Protection issues, not a lot.

And yes, I won't be signing in (or visiting) again.

I only ever dabble in the Cafe. I hate their search function & cryptic forum names. You couldn't search anything for month either.

I think its funny how they have about a million different forum sections for every single minor category of magic but when you look in each of the forum sections there are only about 10posts in each.

Message to the Magic Cafe Manager: You have so many sections you ought to be sectioned yourself.

Making a forum as effective as it can be is a balancing act. I have looked at the Magic Cafe and the excessive categories, excessive adverts and garish poor taste in website style put me off joining more than the content.

I am a web design snob though.

Ha ha ha that's funny as when I put my picture up I got a shirty message from the Deputy Manager Vice President saying he had deleted my picture as he refuses to believe it is me. I told him it was me and put it back up again.

I remember Paul Pacific being furious when he get a message saying they didn't like his foot as an avatar. He went quite berserk over it. Paul's feet are the most sacred part of his body, it seems.

Another thing you have to watch on the magic cafe is the fact that they claim to own anything you put on there. In other words they have the copyright. I don't think that is legal but they try it on anyway.

Sorry, I'm not a lawyer but I'm not aware of a way that its data protection. Just remove your email address and other personal details and just don't log in again - if anything you're then only filling up their database ;)

I can be a bit of a pain to remove a user - the forum software might not even have the ability to easily do it. It's not as easy as it sounds, you have to figure out what to do with posts you made... Do you keep them and run the risk of the writer (you) claiming copyright? Do you remove them and risk making the thread no longer make sense? If you keep them, what username do they go under?

I have no reason to think why it would be illegal?

Sure, if it's in the terms of use I don't see a problem :)

I don't like it myself (and it might be a grey area), but if that's how it's is that's how it is :)
