Origin of DB trick

Postby vladrac » May 9th, '05, 16:42

Hello all,

I am interested in the origins of modern magic, I have learned the slights and other illusions I know from some older books, such as "Pure Magic", sorry forgot the author

Does any one know the origin of the coincidence card trick that Darren Brown performed (the one with J Ross)

Is it something that he has invented or is it a twist on an older trick

Thanks

I'm not sure that I remember exactly but I think it was something along the lines of Spec.1 names card, Spec.1 + Spec.2 put their decks under the table and reverse one card, then the reversed cards turn out to be the named cards.

1st problem, getting spec 1 to name a card, probably done with suggestion.

2nd problem, if its a proper deck they will have only a small chance of flipping the correct card, how ever they do flip a card so he would have to come up with somthing so you dont notice the card they flip over, Just an idea. but if the back and front of the cards were coated with something so they dont stick together, until you flip the card over, then the front of one card sticks to the front of another, so when the deck is shown the card they flipped is stuck to another one which is the correct way around so isnt noticed. then while hes distracting them with turning a card over he could be finding the card spec 1 named and palming it, then he only needs to slip the cards into their decks.

I didnt see it so could be well off, but thats an idea.

Or it could have been an aardvark/lemon, except for the :D :D ...that might have worked. Bit of a risk but hey!

Mebbe this post should go to the MO section?

Yeah, that trick absolutly baffled me, I cant get my head round the hypnotism part of his shows either. Im not saying that it cant be done im just saying that i am not convinced, especially as he says no actors are involved!

Think im digging a hole here for a barrage of abuse arent I ?! I'll stopnow :)

should some of these post be removed??
I've been thinking about that! However, the posts don't actually give away 'the secret' they only discuss possible ways of doing the effect and, as we all know, there's often more than one way of achieving the same result.

yep, good idea but the specs would also need to know how to handle the bw deck in order not to disturb the other cards. Does anybody know if this trick is explained in the video Devils Picture book?

Can the moderators please edit these posts!

I created the same effect about 3 years ago and it is written up for my book which will be out in about 2 months. The fact that Derrens team came up with the same version is a coincidence.

Steve - all that's written above is the effect as we all saw it - I think you'll have to probably take Derren up on whether it should be 'out there' in the public domain as such... As for the secret, though, I'm sure you'll sell plenty of your books for this effect alone.

Zack's right and let me know when your book is out as I'll have a copy!

I Think that I recall seeing this particular trick (If this was the one with J Ross and his wife seated at the table?) and it was prety amazing. It was one of these that the more that you think about it, the more confused you become - well I did anyway

In response to zack's post, the posts that steve is talking about, that he wanted to be deleted were basically posts by me, talking about possible ways that this effect can be done(they have now been deleted). In thinking about this, I came up with a method of replicating derren's effect, and it just happens that this is the same method that steve came up with.
