Coin shell routine

Postby Flood » Jan 4th, '11, 23:52

Right lads I', thinking of stringing together a coin routine with a shell.I already have one perfect but I'm thinking of making it longer.

The question is (particularly for an experienced coin magician who uses shells)..Is there such thing as ''overusing'' the coin shell.Do you think that by having it sight for 5 minutes say, that it's pushing the luck.Again it could be magicians guilt but I'm so conscious of the bloody thing.Do you think maybe by slipping and unslipping the coin out 5-6-7 times that the spectatators could come wary to the gadget or principle.

in short no, you can't overuse a shell provided you treat it as any other coin.
that said just leaving it on display for the sake of it is a golden invitation for a spec to pick it up and have a look, were possible in your routine its better to lay out say four coins in a row then imediately put them in a stack, produce a coin and tip over the stack to show only three coins.
same for coins across display overlapped in the hand then close your hand to stack the coins make one coin fly then open hand to show one coin gone.

by closing then opening your hand straight away you achieve a vanish in a blink of an eye and provide lots of misdirection to produce the traveled coin.
if memory serves sankey does a routine were he literaly picks the shell off of a coin to do a multiply and yet the audience dosn't see the action all they see is the extra coin appear, can't remember the name off hand.

For coins across,
You can put a shell in the spectator's hand, etc...
and I've seen even bolder moves than this too.

Cheers. This is the kind of answer i've been looking for.Although my gaff itself isn't actually identical to the other coins.I'm not talking about size but texture rather.I can see the difference if I compare coins. Is this normal?

Yeah, don't call attention to it and they'll never think to compare them :)

One of the hardest things to do is getting rid of the guilt feeling you have when doing magic. But, when you can get rid of the guilt your magic will grow faster.
Don't worry about the shell, easier said then done right.
One thing I suggest is this if your going to do more than that one routine in a set figure out a way to ring in and out that shell. Nothing worst in my mind is when you watch someone bring in and out coins to do different routine within a set.
Good luck !
No guilt
