Starting out

Postby karloz » Jan 9th, '11, 11:49

Hello all.

Ive always had an intrest in magic (especially mind tricks) and this year as my new years resolution is to do something about it and start learning.

Im going to start out with card tricks, and im currently practising sleights.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to your local magic shop & get a simple pack of cards that has a book attached.

Learn the routines, show-off to your friends. Well, that's how I started!

I think you made a good choice but then I am biased. :)

If you are not sure which type of magic, I suggest looking for a copy of "Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic". It is a big fully illustrated book that teaches lots of tricks of various types.

When you know what type of magic you like specifically, you can then start to get resources to work towards it.

If you do want to pursue cards, then buy a copy of the book "Royal Road to Card Magic". There is also a DVD set by Paul Wilson called the same name which will help you a lot.

Last time I looked you could get the book on Amazon Market Place for cheap.

I already have royal road to card magic, but found it had to understand with just the book and kept putting off using the Dvd. But this year will be different.

I am currently watching encyclopaedia of card sleight (8 volumes) on my phone and carrying a deck with me to practice.

I really like mentalism but thought is need to learn sleight first.

Hi Kaloz, Welcome to the site. I would recommend learning a couple of sleights to start with and then two or three simple effects. This wil enable you to practice the sleight, build your confidence and start learning about, patter presentation and misdirection.

It is easy to become sleight focused and not learn the other aspects of magic. Also use this forum, ask questions, search for answers and never be afraid of taking part in the discussions.

There is a great Do As I Do effect in The Royal Road... No sleights are required (although if you can control cards then your handling might be more convincing). Learn that and your mind-reading can start without delay.

You don't need to know a great deal of sleights to learn mentalism. 13 steps is the mentalist bible, and has 99% of what you'd ever need to know

The thing about mentalism is it's all about presentation and showmanship, but there's still absolutely nothing wrong with learning sleights for your own enjoyment (my dirty secret is that's why I got into magic in the first place)
