I know how Michael's effect works - I just dont understand the term 'ringing in the cooler'. Im not sure how you think defining it could give away the effect...?

Well if you know the effect, the one part that is pivotal to the ending must be obvious? A cold deck is one that has been pre-arranged. Ringing in the cooler ?

I'll confess that it's not a term that I was familiar with in the context used in the show. My only reference to 'coolers' in gambling parlance was based on the old myth that casinos would bring folks who were desparately unlucky to a table to 'cool' down the winning streak of a particularly lucky gambler!

Great film called 'The Cooler' actually with William H Macy in the title role!

However, I agree that it's fairly obvious what it meant after a moments thought.

If it's any consolation, although I know the term "cold deck" and I've seen Michael perform his ace assembly at least two lectures, I couldn't recall the method. Nor had I heard the term "ringing in a cooler". Thank goodness Goole indexes Twitter almost immediately.

Great show, I'd be interested to hear how it was pitched to the the magicians that took part. It seemed surprising that Richard chose a commercially available effect with a well know method to use on P+T.

I thought the show was excellent entertainment for magicians and lay people. I liked the fact that they had chosen a good selection of styles and tricks.

It seemed pretty naive for some of the performers to think that they could fool P and T with 'off the shelf' stuff like gimmick decks and box tricks. Don;t they know who these guys are?

You would think if you wanted to stand any chance at all you had to be presenting something of your own devising.

On the other hand, opportunities to appear on prime time tv are pretty rare, and I would have gone on with nothing but a t**** t** if I couldn't come up with anything else. It's all good promotion.

I agree with some of the other posters that Michael's style was a bit smug and 'old school', but I also realise he a man of awesome skill, and everyone likes different stuff.

Penn & Teller: Fool Us (Rpt)

9pm on Wednesday 19th January (1 hour 35 minutes) on ITV4.

"Already world famous for pushing the limits of magic and illusion, the duo challenge aspiring magicians across the United Kingdom to show them their most baffling trick, from grand illusion to sleight of hand. The prize of a five-star trip to Las Vegas and the opportunity to perform in Penn & Teller's hit stage show is up for grabs if the grand masters of magic are left baffled as to how any of the spectacular tricks were pulled off. Hosted by Jonathan Ross."

New Series of "Fool Us"

Postby danata » Feb 18th, '11, 09:43

I read the below yesterday:

"Also Jonathan Ross has confirmed that he's doing six more episodes of Penn & Teller: Fool Us for ITV in the summer."

All the best!

Just seen this a great show,

Some of the card skills on show were top notch for a newbie like myself.

Looking forward to seeing more of this in the future

Haha! After last time they aren't touching me again with a barge pole! :P

Though I do know one or two very interesting things that may or may not be on the show this year......

You're better than that anyway, Chris. You'll have your very own show soon enough if there's any justice in the world.
