Bemoaning the absence of magic catalogues...

Postby philipsw » Jan 22nd, '11, 22:57

OK, so this one may just be me :-)

I had reason today to dig out an old Davenports catalogue and check something in there. And I suddenly realised, that whilst all the search-ability and video-enabledness [making up words here] and instantaneousness of web stuff is lovely, I REALLY miss flicking through magic catalogues.

I have happy memories of (as a kid) pouring over them for hours and working out possible methods and trying to work out how to spend my (very few) pennies etc. Is that just nostalgia? Is it just me?...

In a wierd postscript to the above, I realised some time ago that certain random 'impulse' purchases at magic jumble sales etc. were made purely on the strength of the images still imprinted on my mind from old Supreme catalogues - so for example there is only one acceptable kind of rabbit for elusive rabbits (and it is not those ubiquitous 'fat' ones, but the 'Norman' style tall thin ones) and a disecto has to be in glorious red and yellow!

Agreed. I still have my old Davies catalogue, and the supreme one. I also have several old unique studio cats, and some from the american dealers. Its an invaluable tool when researching old effects.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

In Paul. Daniels sales on ebay he is selling old catalogues and says he collected them for ideas etc.

I remember getting my first one and looking at all the effects, most I couldn't afford and dream of how they were done and performing them.

The good old days. I must be getting old.
