"Hi and welcome to TM"

Postby katrielalex » May 22nd, '05, 13:09

Would it be possible to institute a policy of forbidding all posts saying

Hi and welcome to TM
.

I get really irritated having to scroll through all these useless one-liners.

At the very least, could we make it so that you should say something personal as a welcome? I mean, just repeating Hi... really doesn't seem to me to be very useful.

Just a thought.

but, as much as they all say the same thing, its a polite way to greet a new member to the forum

Yes...but it seems like it's a bit pointless. I mean, even just saying something 5 words long but that was connected to the person would be much better than just "Hi and welcome to TM".

Just an opinion but...

I'm sorry, but a thread complaining about someone saying 'hello'?

There's got to be more to your life, surely...

It's sometimes difficult to write more than a basic one line welcome when you don't really know that much about a new person who's usually making their very first post.

If you think back to your first post, didn't you feel good about the fact that other members, particulalry some of the preferred and more experienced members took the time of day to say a very simple hello? Would you have felt as welcome if having posted an introduction, nobody bothered to reply because they didn't have more to say than those five words? What a stuck up bunch we would look!

I suppose that I'm one of the biggest culprits of the 'hi and welcome to TM' posts in response to an introduction but I have no guilt about doing this if it makes a new member that little bit more welcome and impresses that we're a friendly group of like minded individuals (well most of the time) who are willing to help, and give an honest opinion.

You do have the choice of not ready any introductions

And I thought I was the biggest culprit of "Hi and welcome to TM".

I agree totally with the above quote, as I find it so difficult to know what to say to a new member who I don't really know but want to bid a welcome to at the same time not wanting to alienate them, as I ultimately want to make them welcome, as I am sure we all do.

I am sure it must be quite daunting for them to come into a forum of magicians especially if they are new to magic.

I know I was in awe of other more experienced magicians when I first started....! :)

I suppose we all have to consider that some members appear once and then dissapear into the magicians ether 8)

But, you have to give newbies a chance, we were all there once

yep...that is true....
anyone who takes the the time to reply,be it five words or not,is greatly appreciated by the initial poster...
Think of all those job applications when you get no reply..A little discerning eh?
