Good pocket mentalism

Postby Caligari » Feb 11th, '11, 08:34

I'm working my way through Corinda at the moment, but I'd like the lowdown on what pocket effects people carry. Kioku sounds impressive, but what else would you good folks recommend?

I'm always carrying a pocket index of red cards, if that's what you mean. It can add so much to any effect with cards, mental or otherwise. Or even without cards - just asking the person to imagine a card.

Thanks Dup. I'm after anything that's easily carried, whether that be ready-made tricks or something that requires a bit more preparation. I'll take a look at those index pages for a few ideas!

Patrick Kuffs Bold business is a grwat impromptu routine I often use.

Have a good look through Paul Brooks website as well.

Glad to be of service :)

You can find the instructions on how to manufacture pocket indexes in Corinda's 13 steps.

Paul Brook's products and books are good. The thought reader card I've used a lot. Didn't like you know who as much, but would highly recommend the thought reader. His instructions are a joy to read. Nicely laid out, detailed with scripts and links to a forum to discuss further ideas.

Of the Outlaw cards Kioku is nice, not too heavy on the memory work. Usually impresses. Psi card from outlaw I like, but the thought reader card does the same sort of job and usually wins through for me. Sanctum 4 I didn't like as I didn't feel I could give it a decent performance.

Zoltar from Alchemy Moon is a good piece of mentalism, which still has more to come.

I'm very fond of Killer Elite Pro but some magicians don't like it. The props are pure sexiness. Kioku is just amazing; you'll really have to practice your presentation but it's jaw-dropping stuff when done right.

I've heard good things about Paul Carnazzo's line of business card stuff.

Lexicology
Animania
Symbolism
Test Conditions

Powerball 60 is a cool pocket effect using old lotto tickets.

Not to mention, a stack of business cards (maybe some of them have a few marks) is enough to do nearly anything at all.

I will also give a nod to Killer Elite Pro - though I use my own variation, it is a very cool effect and plays very well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... business cards (or blank ones if you're not the type to carry them).

What else do you want to perform? A Q&A act, drawing dups, something like Magicians Graphology (Nyman), etc etc Hell, just use one for an equivique force from a bunch of borrowed objects.

You don't need anything else. Don't get me wrong, things such as Kioku are gorgeous, but if you've got a pile of business cards or blanks then you should be set to go for all situations.

I really don't understand this obsession for 'pocket mentalism' - something to write on/with and a brain..... that's all you need.

Buisness cards float my boat too, I could do a full set with just a stack of business cards or a pad of paper. Why do you need anything else when it comes to mentalism?

Performing is sometimes about the show. I could do quite a number of effects with just blank business cards, but a bit of visual variety does not necessarily go amiss.

Outlaw Effects produces a number of good pocket mentalism cards, which have more than one possible effect built in. They also do the aforementioned Kioku, which is excellent.

Paul Carnazzo's range is quite good, but I prefer Outlaw's offerings. Zoltar is nice too.

grant_m23: Thanks for that. It's given me some more good ideas.

Lee Smith: Bold Business sounds fun. I'll check out Paul Brook's site soon.

Jobasha: I've been looking at Outlaw and like the look of a lot of their stuff (I've also been tempted by some of their wallets). I'll also check out the Thought Reader and Zoltar soon.

Replicant: Killer Elite Pro sounds intriguing from what I've heard (like the username btw - BR's one of my favourites).

Demitri: I'll be researching Paul Carnazzo too. In Powerball 60 can the old lotto tickets be picked up from anywhere, or do they need to be prepped? Thanks for the thumbs up on Killer Elite Pro. And business cards - of course! My inexperience shines like a beacon, eh?

More responses to other posts later, but thanks for your advice!

I usually have my business cards in my pocket, and they are extremely visual, with one side being a very artful oil drawing and the name of my company on it. The information side also contains a small array of numbers at the bottom. When people ask what these are for, I tell them I'm going to show them, and tell them to look carefully at the numbers. I take the card, write down a prediction behind my back, and play out everything else with the sw**i which I always keep in my pocket.
It's a nice sales item, plus I teach them how to do the same thing with one digit, and then offer them more business cards to try at home. I'm pretty sure I've had at least one show booked using this method where they become my advertisers :)
