since its mine.
The change bag as a show stopper.
The humble change bag has been a staple of my children's and cabaret shows for well ever, its a classic prop that adults and children alike revel in even when they are quite sure how it is done.
Here follows is a routine though simple in nature applies the process of the change bag to its fullest, whilst fulfilling all the requirements for a highly entertaining routine.

The bag is a single change zipped unit but you could use a standard bag or a double change to your own taste
The play out:- you bring out a change bag and show a yellow silk, I'm going to show you a trick I learnt from u-tube this morning so if it's not great don't blame me, oh and for the magicians out there I'll be using the si-stebbings pocket move see if you can spot it.
Show silk then place it in the bag and out from the bottom of the zip and openly tuck it in your pocket acting as though you haven't done anything odd.
Turn the bag inside out and say its gone, re invert bag and proceed to retrieve the silk via the bag from your pocket, with difficulty, and take a bow.

“OK you caught me so I'll just have to do it the hard way”, zip up bag and casually turn bag inside out do the change and place silk into bag, do the change and show silk has vanished by inverting bag.
Its important at this point to pause, you've just performed a miracle and you need give the audience time to react, they will be expecting another con move so look for the reaction before you continue, see section on audience control and marking, re invert bag.
“the last time I did this someone told me to put a sock in it, so I did”, do change and produce a long sock ala pippy long stocking, pause “here's the silk too” and produce socks with silk tied between ala 20th century silks.

OK lets break it down, performance wise from a basic change move you have a sucker / con part a true vanish, a comedy production and a impossible production, this is the true power of the change bag.

You will need:-
1x change bag.
2x silks yellow.
1x long sock.
1 pair of socks.

In the change compartment goes the pair of socks with the silk tied between, on top of that goes the stocking / long sock, rolled from the foot end then the single silk, this is the travel set up which you can keep in your bag ready to go.
If you use a standard bag then you can keep the single silk in the main compartment and pull it out of the bag and pocket it for the sucker move, either works well but I have found the zipped bag lends itself better than the regular bag for the sucker effect.
The play out to the routine adds elements of the u-tube generation and sets up for the sucker portion as they will expect it to be c*** (not the best) and being caught out brings you onside with the audience but it must be stressed that you need to sell this effect to the audience or it will go down like a lead balloon.

Having set them up and taken the fall, you then actually produce the vanish you and as there reacting to the minor miracle you have produced and are starting to appreciate your skill you hit them with the 1-2 punch finisher.

Yes, it is very generous to share so much info about a routine.

I've designed a new type of change bag. Well, I think it's new. I'll make it on my sewing machine and see if it works!
