Hello folks!
I've always loved playing with cards, mucking about with various false shuffles etc, but my soon-to-be wife bought me the Royal Road to Card Magic for Christmas and since then I've been really hooked!
Gathering together a variety of little tricks to show friends - mainly self working things at the moment, but I'm practicing more advanced things like the pass and erdnase change now. Just wanted to say hello, and I hope to learn many things here!
I think the main thing I need to work on is the presentation/finding my own style. Especially with the largely self-working tricks, the magic is all in how you put it across, not the actual mechanics itself.
There's a great section right at the beginning of Derren Brown's 'tricks of the mind' book where he takes a ridiculously simple coin vanish and iterates over it adding little embellishments until it becomes a proper decent trick - the method remains exactly the same, but the effect is improved a hundred times over by adding misdirection, implanting false memories and so on.
So yeah, I think that kind of thing is hugely important. That and practicing the proper sleights so I can perform those decently

Cheers!
