Ghosts? Spirits? Dead people?

Postby Dudedavid » Feb 28th, '11, 16:20

After visiting this website:
http://www.lebanoncircle.co.uk/
I am looking for some tricks about spirits, ghosts, dead peple and such.
Are there some tricks you would suggest in buying?
I thought about "changing portrait" of dead peple, but sort of "passive" effect, though very nice...

Thank you so much in advance!

Heavens above. Where to start?

Try 13 Steps to Mentalism first and see how you get on there. Ultimately you could move on to (drum roll please) "Paranormal Entertainer" and/or "The Jack the Ripper Seance" PDF's, both available from Lebanon Circle as downloads. Just look through the menus for Paul Voodini books.

People are going to think you're a sock puppet or something!

Trust me. If you want to fake a seance from begining to end, forget it.
the problem with gaffed seances are, they tend to turn into a magic show, with the lights off.

the "trick" for want of a better word, is knowing what to do, and when to stop.

As advised, buy and read Pauls books, as they will give you every single thing you will ever need.

yes, you can dress up the evening with a few choice relics, to get the sitters in the mood, but even then these items must be treated with care. See my other post on the handling of relics, for ideas on that.

once the lights go off, and the hands join, everything must come from those that are sitting at that table. Most of the time, the people that atend seance performances, believe in such things. the few performers that come along, have an open mind, or are at least willing to believe.

I enjoy atending the seances, because i have to take me.. and little else.

If a magician, is an actor playing the part of a magician, then the master of the seance room, has to play the part of the necromancer..
And play the role so well, that they forget where the actor ends, and the Character begins.

Seriously, read ghost stories, listen to Radio 7 at Midnight,where they play some fantastic spooky plays, and imerse yourself in the atmosphere of the spooky, and for a while, forget tricks. :)

for then, you will find out the true magic behind the magic.

also, if you do this, you will find that your every day magic will improve no end..

In anoher thread you said that you only perform for your parents and friends, so convincing them you are a master of the underworld will be rather tricky.

This kind of performance is not based around tricks, nor will you receive rapturous rounds of applause (which damages many magician's egos).
As Dale said in his rather informative post, you are acting a role.

I see it as creating an illusion. One big illusion akin to a horror film, which requires the audience to suspend any preconceptions they may have about the paranormal and go along with it. This can only be acheived with a good and convincing actor in the main role.

I saw the friends and Family post after i wrote this, and thought the same thing.
It is a tricky area in another respect too, because if you do perform something that is intended to give the impression that you have the spirit of a lost one come bask, it will almost definatly be somebody that both yoiu and your audience know. Which will make the overall effect very weak at best, laughable at worse.

what i think you need to do, is look at story telling, rather than seance magic, because that can be based on fiction from begining to end. Its far more theatrical in style too.
dvds are available .. these for example..

and of course you have.....

eugine Berger.

Who's great routine Inquisition can be seen on line. Not just by him either!!

No disrespect to the chap, but if you are buying some potentially expensive props and spending a lot of time just to impress your mum and dad, wouldn't it be cheaper and less time-consuming treating them to a Harvested instead?

@daleshrimpton
@Lord Freddie : You are right about the "role" of the magician, in this case.
Now it's clear it's different to perform some tricks and this kind of situation.
I can not jump out of the top hat and pretend to be a medium all of a sudden...
I should need the right atmosphere...

@daleshrimpton:
thank you so much for the videos.
I really liked the routine, and I did not know the guy.
Moreover, I saw this one from chriss angel or someone else: (about the mind reading and the book)

Is this kind of mentalism sold and explained somewhere?

@Lord Freddie: LOOL you are right :D

The arena for which you speak is Bizarre Magick, the trend in magic just before Mentalism became the "in-thing" :twisted: (fortunately, it seems to be making a come back)

If you like "Haunted" Magic you may as well get the bible's of the craft;

The Book of Haunted Magick by Rick Maue
Arcana of Bizarre Magick by Jim Magus

These are the first two that come to mind while the Larry Baukin Anthology (available through MEVPROSHOP.com) comes in at a close 3rd to the list (I just finished it last month and it's quite awesome)

Get your hands on the complete MAGICK of Bascom Jones fame as well as the INVOCATION and other such periodicals of the past.

I'm uncertain if the site is back up and running but DragonSkull used to be the best source for this kind of material on line along with the Shadow Network/Shadow Digest, and ICBM Forums (I believe they are now defunked however)

Mediumistic aspects of Bizarre Magick (Mentalism) don't require a heck of a lot and for such material you would be wise to get a copy of Paul's PARANORMAL ENTERTAINER (listed at Lebanon Circle) but you may likewise wish to look up Bill Montana's site in that he offers a perspective that stems from a family legacy in the Spiritualists Church. The other site you will do well with is http://www.carlyletouch.com/index.html Ed was the primary Medium to the Houdini Seance at the Magic Castle for years and is always willing to answer questions form serious minded individuals.

This should be more than enough material to get you moving forward but heed my warning, this form of magical performances is very addictive. :twisted:

Great advice from Craig and I second the recommendation for Mr Voodini's books.
