I recently returned from Canada and had gimmicks made in Canadian "loonies" for my coin work as well making a gimmick for Extreme Burn in Canadian dollars. - This is the performers luxury though, the cost is justifiable as the "gig will pay for it".

If you do go for the half dollar option I'd use the coin in conjuction with some other coin effects. Get the audience used to holding/examining the coins then switch in your gimmicks - the coins across routine seems like an obvious finale.

As an aside whilst performing in San Francisco I was questioned numerous times about US half dollars - they are almost entirely out of circulation over ther and some people were more eager to examine them for nostalgia's sake than out of any suspicion!

Where in San Franciso were you performing? US halves are not even close to being out of circulation. Not even in San Francisco.

Explaining away foreign currency is easily explained through routining, (yes even impromptu). Once again it is all about performing.

With that said if you are 'performing' not as a magician but just some guy in a pub (I'm not sure why you would do that but if you did) then yes having local currency is a bonus.

point I should have made was I have a £2 version because they are a great contrast to my chinese coins, having given / sold all my american halfs and coppers during my break.

any coin / gaff can be explained away if you give it some thought afterall your are expecting people to belive you can translocate mater and bend the forces of nature itself, thats why I primarily use chinese coins because there very nature ie having been equipt with holes in time and space already makes them special.
