My copy is still on my shelf. It had instructions for building props and I think had Ali Bongo's involvement in some way. It was published by the St Michael brand and therefore must have been bought from Marks & Spencer. I'll post the ISBN later in case you want to find a copy, and confirm the author and date of publishing - 1985 or thereabouts.

"Abracadabra - with your bricks"

Text by Jette Bak, Illustrated by Hans-Henrik Ley.
Published 1986 by Lego UK Limited.

ISBN: 87-88982-32-7 - links to abebooks second hand books site, but doesn't link direct to search results for some reason. Eight copies available just now.

Contents:

The magic wand/ the floating wand/ the wand that keeps on growing/
Jumping jellybeans/ wand in a bottle/ tricks of the trade/ how to put on a super magic show/ a good way to start!/ how to feel colours!/
A magician's golden rules/ find the missing coin/ the mysterious house/
The "tricky stick"/ the haunted house/ the Arabian magic shells/
What to say in front of your audience/ the string-along block/
Quick-change blocks/ pick a brick/ wand through a block/
Ring on a wand/ the Indian rope trick/ brick through plate/ Chinese sticks/
The upside-down round-about house.

All of the effects require basic props built with lego, with plenty of decent illustrations though no building instructions, and all were well beyond my ken when I was five. I built the magic wand, and that was it. Partly because at that age I still thought magic was real...

The Ali Bongo book I was thinking of is something different, as it turns out.

So it was basically well known illusions, but with the props made of Lego, rather than Lego specific magic?

The thought occurs that Lego is now so cemented in our psyche that there's a market for tricks using gimmicked bricks...
